One of the most common questions I get asked is how do you establish trust for a new start-up?

Especially if you have a very small budget and can’t afford proper influencers who can share their audience and long-developed trust to your product.

For me, the best way has to be founder ads, new users and new audiences can put a face to a brand and it immediately feels 100 times more trustworthy.

What else do you think is a good way to establish trust with a small budget? by @choochootickets

ScotRail’s new £10 minimum fare came into force on 1 July, and it’s tied to a wider crackdown across the whole UK rail network. Here’s the full picture.

The £10 minimum fare:
If you board a ScotRail train without a ticket, and there was a way to buy one beforehand (ticket office, machine, or app), you’re now charged £10 minimum, regardless of how much your actual journey costs. ScotRail says fare evasion costs Scotland’s Railway over £11 million a year.

Their own analysis found the ticket office was open in 74% of ticketless journeys, and a working machine was available in 90% of cases. So this isn’t really targeting people who had no way to pay, it’s aimed at people who could have bought a ticket and didn’t.

Since the education campaign started in 2022, ticketless travel on ScotRail has dropped from 8.8% to 2.63%.

There are exemptions: Kids for a Quid, certain concession tickets, stations without retail facilities, and passengers whose disability prevents them using a machine or ticket office.

The refund change:
Since 1 April 2026, National Rail changed the refund rules for Anytime, Off-Peak, Day Travelcard, Rover and Ranger tickets. You now have to request a refund by 23:59 the day before the ticket becomes valid. The old rule, letting people claim refunds up to 28 days after their travel date, has been scrapped.

Why? Some people were travelling on a ticket, avoiding having it scanned, then later claiming a refund by falsely saying they never used it. The industry estimates this cost around £40 million a year. Advance tickets, Season tickets, and Delay Repay claims aren’t affected, and refunds for genuine disruption or exceptional circumstances (like a medical emergency) still stand.

The bigger number:
This all sits inside a broader push. A 2025 Office of Rail and Road review found fare evasion costs the UK railway up to £400 million a year, and these changes are part of the industry’s response.

Not stating an opinion on this one. Genuinely curious what you all think, fair crackdown on people gaming the system, or too blunt an instrument that catches out honest mistakes too?
