📣 TVIFF 2026 Gala Premiere announcement: ‘STAN BY ME’ a short documentary exploring queer life in Cumbria through the story of Stan, a gay man in his late 80s whose life spans decades of profound social change.

😯 From criminalisation and loss, to faith, love, and community activism, Stan’s experiences offer a unique window into a hidden history of LGBTQ+ life in the rural north.

❤️ Blending personal testimony with a wider exploration of queer Cumbrian identity, ‘Stan By Me’ asks what it means to belong in a place that has often overlooked the people who were there all along.

🍿 This gala screening will be followed by a live interview and Q&A with Stan and renowned LGBTQ+ filmmaker Stuart Armstrong, along with a screening of his previous short film ‘Meat Raffle’ which won Best Comedy at TVIFF 2025.

🎟️ Tickets are available on a Pay What You Decide basis and can be booked now through the link to All TVIFF 2026 Events in our Insta Bio.

🎬 The UK gala premiere of ‘Stan By Me’ takes place on Day 3 of TVIFF 2026 Saturday 14th November at ARC Stockton Arts Centre.

Some shots from a test roll of 16mm I shot with @juliaemilyparks 📸 this was the best day, filled with experimenting and pumpkin soup! If Julia ever runs a Bolex workshop you have to be there, Or be ▪️

There’s some tracking shots, slow motion and a double exposure.

Special thanks to Sandro and the chicken for standing in for us, and Mrs Parks for letting us commandeer the kitchen!

On Saturday we wrapped on @stuarttarmstrong’s latest short film, Leavers’ Day… and today is my birthday! 🎂

I’m 29 today and I can’t lie, I feel pretty emotional. I can’t believe how lucky I am to have gotten to work on this project, with people that I love so much, in my home county. I want to do this forever. It took me till my late twenties to figure this out, but I got there!!

There are so many people that made this possible, and I’ll thank everyone individually.

But I owe @stuarttarmstrong so much thanks. I can’t believe we only met a year ago. Since then we’ve done so much together, as collaborators and friends. I have so much belief, trust and respect for you as a person and an artist.

Lastly I can’t talk about my love for filmmaking without mentioning my brother, Lee Armstrong. He is the reason I worked on this film, or any film. After his sudden passing in February 2024, I decided to climb Kilimanjaro in his memory, I took a video camera with me, and made a short film (unreleased). Making that film, along with the talks mum and I do to raise awareness of Addison’s Disease (shout out @addisonsdiseaseuk - T-shirt in some pics!). Taught me the power of storytelling, as a force for good.

Whilst we were filming last week, my parents went to high pike. Lee’s favourite Lake District walk. To scatter some of his ashes.

Full hearts
