The best camera is the one that’s always on you
- RICOH GR IIIx.

Ironically, for a camera that never leaves my side, I discovered a beautiful composition during breakfast last weekend at the InterContinental Hotel and had to rush upstairs to grab it.

A moody green couch, dimly lit by a lamp in the corner of the room. I knew I had to document it. So I grabbed my Ricoh and hurried back down to breakfast to capture it.

That little moment pretty much sums up why I love this camera.

It allows me to document moments that don’t necessarily belong in a portfolio, but deserve the same love and attention as the photos that do.

I could have easily pulled out my phone, captured the moment and moved on. But there’s a particular craft in documenting a scene with a camera that requires intentionality. Pressing the on button. Framing the composition. Being fully present without a notification appearing halfway through the moment.

What started as one innocent photograph quickly became a 45-minute walk around the hotel, noticing moments most people would pass by. Seeking out light, shadows, shapes and little fragments that sparked curiosity.

The GR IIIx makes it effortless to follow those moments.

No bag. No tripod. Just a tiny camera in your pocket and the freedom to notice things differently.

⚫ BLACK MYTH: WHITE RABBIT GALLERY.

Curated by David Williams, BLACK MYTH brings together a powerful collection of contemporary Chinese art, and documenting the exhibition became an exercise in looking beyond the artworks themselves.

My approach was to photograph the work through the architecture of the gallery, using existing structures, thresholds, openings and lines to create frames within frames. Rather than treating each artwork as an isolated object, I wanted to show how the pieces occupy and interact with the space around them.

I also wanted to humanise the documentation. Including visitors within the compositions gives scale, movement and context, while showing how the work is actually experienced rather than simply what it looks like on the wall.

For this one, my favourite pocket-sized companion came along for the ride. The RICOH GR IIIx made moving through the gallery incredibly easy, allowing me to work quickly and discreetly while still having the control to build precise architectural compositions. One moment I could be carefully aligning a frame within a frame, and the next I could turn around and capture a fleeting interaction between a visitor and an artwork.

Small camera. Big results. Just how I like it.

Save this for inspiration if you're documenting a gallery, exhibition or creative space and want to approach it through the lens of an architectural photographer.

📸 Corner Shop House Silhouettes.

I’ve spent years believing architecture photography needed the tilt shifts, tripods and all the technical setups.

But after visiting the Corner Shop House one moody afternoon, I left all of that behind and just brought my trusted handheld companion - My new Ricoh GR IIIx… and honestly, it completely delivered.

I stopped chasing the classic angles and started noticing the things that actually made the house feel special. The soft light and textures. The moody shadows. The way the spaces unfolded naturally as you moved through them.

This home somehow feels both grounded and incredibly calm, and I feel really honoured to have documented the ambience and silence within the space rather than just the rooms themselves.

The National Portrait Gallery: When the Architecture Steals the Show

A couple of months ago, while visiting Canberra, I made the National Portrait Gallery a priority after family and plenty of people on Reddit told me it was a must-see.

With my RICOH GR IIIx, I walked in expecting to spend my time admiring the portraits. Instead, I found myself completely distracted by the architecture (surprise surprise….!)

The afternoon light poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, filling the gallery with this incredible golden glow. The way it wrapped itself around the timber and concrete was impossible to ignore. I wandered slowly, chasing textures and quiet moments… The GR IIIx felt perfectly suited to the space, letting me quietly document the details that caught my eye without interrupting the atmosphere.

Then, before I knew it, it was time to leave.

The funny thing is... I honestly couldn't tell you what exhibition was on that day. But I can still remember exactly how that building felt.

Sometimes a place leaves its mark not because of what's hanging on the walls, but because of the way the light makes you stop and look a little longer.

Has a building ever had an impact on you? Share your memories in the comments below! 👇👇

Pushed the Ricoh GR IIIx to its limits at the MOTORBIKES & MONOCHROME workshop in Sydney with @rising_sun_workshop and @ricohgraustralia.

Neon spill, deep shadows, and that late-night garage glow ⛽ 🏍️ exactly the kind of chaos I like to translate into frames.

Big thanks to the hosts and the talent who brought the energy (and a few too many wines 🍷) to an unforgettable evening.

Fired up to be part of this growing community and see where it goes next 📸

📸 Ricoh GR IIIx - White Bay Power Station.

Spent a few hours at White Bay Power Station for the Biennale with my Ricoh GR IIIx.

Most people were focused on the artworks and the atmosphere (totally understandable!), but I found myself more interested in these small, simple things happening in the background of it all… light, geometry, texture.

Just watching how contrast simplifies everything down into shapes.
I kept getting distracted from the installations and back into the building itself. The way the light was hitting everything was just too good to ignore. With the GR IIIx, I was mostly just walking, pointing my camera everywhere and documenting light. It’s small enough that I’m not thinking about the camera, which suits this kind of place.

Inside, the contrast was intense. Some parts of the building were basically white from the overcast light pouring in, and other areas dropped straight into black shadows.

I wasn’t trying to balance it either. I was exposing for the highlights and letting the shadows fall to complete darkness. That’s kind of the key with this look… you’re not trying to show everything, you’re deciding what doesn’t need to be there.

I also started noticing how important shadow becomes in this. Not just what’s lit, but what disappears. The shadows weren’t hiding the structure, they were actually shaping it. Turning beams and pipes into silhouettes and simple forms. And the more I slowed down, the more it became about small decisions. One step to the left and a whole frame would change. A patch of light would turn a wall into something graphic for a few seconds, then it would be gone again.

Curious how others approach this kind of space… do you find yourself exposing for the highlights and letting shadows fall away when you’re shooting high contrast scenes, or do you try to show everything and hold detail in both?

📷 Burradoo Park Farm, Bowral 🍂

I visited Burradoo Park Farm not long after it opened and quickly realised a few hours wasn't nearly enough time.

Every path seemed to lead somewhere beautiful. Glasshouses framed by flowers, winding garden trails, rows of seasonal colour, and endless little details that made me stop and look twice.

As a photographer, it felt like a playground.

These photos were all captured on my Ricoh GR IIIx, which has very quickly become my favourite companion for days like this. It's not because it's the most complicated camera I own. Quite the opposite. It lives in my pocket, which means it's always there when a moment catches my attention. A splash of colour. Beautiful light on a greenhouse. A perfectly framed view through a doorway.

No bag to unpack, no gear to set up. Just pull it out and start shooting.

Looking back through these beautiful memories, I'm reminded just how much I enjoyed wandering the grounds and simply paying attention to the details. I also realised that I totally forgot to take a photo of the beautiful farm-to-table lunch we had in their restaurant - HIGHLY recommend. The farm shop is also really beautiful, which is where the fresh flowers were captured.

If you find yourself in Bowral, do yourself a massive favour and add Burradoo Park Farm to your to-do list. Be sure to check their website before you travel though, as I believe that reservations may now be necessary.

🔴 COLOUR HUNTING // RICOH GR3X

I didn't go to the White Bay Biennale to photograph the artwork.

I went looking for interesting industrial photos.

The huge machinery, pipes, steel beams and walkways were what caught my attention from the start. But as I wandered through the power station, I noticed something interesting. I kept gravitating towards scenes that contained red.

Red pipes. Red railings. Red warning lights. Red ambient glow spilling through the darkness.

After a while, it became impossible to ignore, so I gave myself a challenge: colour hunt for red.

Instead of photographing everything that looked interesting, I only stopped when I found red somewhere in the frame. Sometimes it dominated the image. Sometimes it was just a small detail hiding amongst the industrial chaos.

It's one of the things I love about walking around with a Ricoh GR IIIx. A simple constraint can completely change the way you see a place. What started as an afternoon photographing an old power station turned into a scavenger hunt for a single colour.

These are a few of the reds I found along the way. 🔴

If you were going colour hunting for a day, which colour would you choose and why?

⚫ THE POWER OF SHADOWS.

As an architectural photographer, my focus is usually on the building itself. The lines, the structure, the way everything fits together.

Instead of treating the building as the subject, I tried to focus my attention on how the shadows were doing something different. In a lot of these frames, the structure actually disappears into darkness, and what’s left becomes more like a backdrop or frame.

That absence of detail in the shadows ends up pushing your attention to whatever is happening inside the space. People, movement, small moments. It changes the role of the architecture. It’s still there, but it’s not the main focus anymore. It’s more like it’s holding everything together quietly in the background.

The shadow becomes part of the composition in its own right. Not by showing more, but by taking things away.

So instead of photographing the building, I ended up photographing what the building contains, and letting the shadows do the framing.

Which one is your favourite?
