An incendiary new trio bringing together Leila Bordreuil, Chris Corsano and Michael Foster, with Zach Rowden joining the bill for a solo set.

Brooklyn-based cellist Leila Bordreuil works with improvisation, extended techniques, preparations and amplification, treating the cello as an abstract resonant body rather than a fixed instrumental voice. Texture, phantom overtones and pitched fragments sit at the centre of a practice that also extends into site-specific and spatial composition.

Chris Corsano has spent more than two decades at the intersections of collective improvisation, free jazz, avant-rock and experimental music. His solo playing has expanded the drum kit into an orchestra of bowed strings, modified reeds, resonant metals and self-built instruments, alongside a vast collaborative history stretching from Joe McPhee and Evan Parker to Björk, Bill Orcutt and Okkyung Lee.

New York saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Michael Foster works across free improvisation, noise and queer identity, using instrumental preparations and a broad, expressive approach to the saxophone across solo work, ensembles and collaborations.

Opening the evening, Zach Rowden works with drone, repetitive structures and noise through upright and electric bass, violin and electronics. Based in New Haven, Connecticut, he is one half of Tongue Depressor, has performed with the Hyperion Ensemble, and has collaborated extensively with Bordreuil alongside artists including Aki Onda and Paul Flaherty.

A night of close, physical improvisation, from Rowden’s sustained structures and dense resonance to the volatile interaction of cello, drums and saxophone in Bordreuil, Corsano and Foster’s trio.

Now announced is the full programme of lectures and masterclasses. These events will run from September 29 to October 10, covering topics ranging from the potential of artificial intelligence to reshape contemporary music to practices in sound art and free improvisation.
The sessions will be led both by festival musicians - such as Chris Corsano and Laura Cocks - and by specially invited professionals, including artist Leif Elggren and technology‑and‑literature researcher David Jhave Johnston. The entire educational programme is free of charge.

More detailed information about all festival lectures, masterclasses, and panel discussions can be found on the Skaņu Mežs 2026 website.

Another night of concerts, the first one after the festival, at the trusted Galerie vorn und oben in Eupen, featuring the always mesmerizing trio of New York-based saxophonist and multi‑instrumentalist Michael Foster, French‑American cellist and composer Leila Bordreuil, and New York-based drummer Chris Corsano, one of the most influential and sought‑after drummers in contemporary experimental music.

Support comes from Belgian baritone saxophonist Hanne De Backer, based in Brussels, an incredibly energetic and versatile performer who mainly works in improvised music.

Michael Foster, Leila Bordreuil & Chris Corsano, trio
Foster, Bordreuil and Corsano have been active as a trio ever since 2012, when Corsano joined the duo of Foster and Bordreuil, intent on developing a shared aesthetic and artistic vision and concept. Their playing and artistic research are visceral and iconoclastic, making them luminaries of the American noise and improv scene and far beyond. They are touring Europe as a trio for the first time.

Hanne De Backer
Versatile and unique, Hanne De Backer is the founder of the gabbro collective, where she works as both a musician and an artistic and production leader. She is currently active in many bands and projects spanning improv, composed, and contemporary music. She also frequently collaborates with improvised constellations with musicians from Belgium and abroad.

O Pequeno Auditório do CCVF receberá no primeiro sábado do festival um trio formado por três excelentes instrumentistas – Dave Rempis, Jason Adasiewicz e Chris Corsano – associados à estética do jazz proveniente de Chicago nos anos 2000, caraterizada pela fluidez estilística e pela preponderância da improvisação.

Dave Rempis é um saxofonista, compositor e improvisador norte-americano, figura de destaque da cena jazzística de Chicago, com um percurso marcado pela colaboração com grandes nomes do jazz contemporâneo e pela atividade como curador e editor.

Jason Adasiewicz, vibrafonista e compositor norte-americano, é uma das figuras relevantes da música improvisada e de vanguarda de Chicago, conhecido pelo trabalho em múltiplas formações e colaborações.

Chris Corsano, baterista autodidata norte-americano, é reconhecido pelo seu trabalho na intersecção entre improvisação, free jazz e rock experimental, tanto em colaborações como a solo.

I’m very happy to oficially share some news!

The new album, Lines in the Sky, will be released on October 30 by 577 Records.

To celebrate the release, we’ll return to Villa Hakasalmi, the place where this music was born. It feels very special to bring the project back to the room where these ideas first took shape.

Joining me will be Liudas Mockūnas on saxophones and the incredible Chris Corsano on drums. Rather than recreating the album, we’ll continue exploring new sounds together through improvisation, listening, and musical dialogue.
