One of the most unsettling realizations we can have is that we've been drifting through our own lives.

Not depressed. Not necessarily unhappy. Just... elsewhere.

You know that feeling when you've driven miles down a highway and suddenly realize you don't remember the road you just traveled?

You were there the whole time. But you weren't really there.

I wonder how much of our lives we experience that way.

Because missing your life rarely happens all at once. It happens quietly, in a thousand small, almost invisible moments.

The conversation where your eyes kept drifting toward your phone.

The sunset that unfolded while your mind was somewhere else.

The laughter you barely noticed.

The ordinary Tuesday you might give anything to relive years from now.

And here's what gets me... We rarely recognize the moments we'll someday treasure while we're actually living them.

We don't know which conversation will be the last. Which ordinary afternoon will become a cherished memory. Which seemingly insignificant moment will someday bring tears to our eyes.

We only know that we're here. Now. And maybe that's enough to change everything.

I don't think the question is whether we've missed moments. Of course we have. We're human.

The question is whether we'll continue drifting through the extraordinary life unfolding right in front of us. Or whether we'll begin to notice. To pay attention.

To be fully here for the moments we haven't yet learned we'll someday miss.

Because someday, this very moment might be one we wish we could live again.

And the beautiful thing is... we're still here to live it.

This Is The Sacred Moment.

What if the secret to a fulfilling life isn’t getting life to go the way we want, but learning to say YES to life exactly as it unfolds?

The great mythologist Joseph Campbell asked, “The big question is whether you are going to be able to say a hearty yes to your adventure.”

But how do we say YES when life brings disappointment, heartbreak, uncertainty, or loss?

What if joy isn’t the absence of sorrow? What if it’s the willingness to embrace this extraordinary adventure of being alive, even when things don’t go according to plan?

Here’s something I’ve been reflecting on:

You don’t have to love everything that happens in your life to love your life.

You can grieve what you’ve lost and still say YES to what remains. You can acknowledge what went wrong and still say YES to what might go right.

There’s an extraordinary freedom waiting for us when we stop arguing with reality and begin embracing the life that’s actually here.

Two people. Same porch. Same sunset.

The same sky doing the same wondrous thing it has done for billions of years.

She sees the golden light spilling across the horizon. The colors. The beauty. The quiet miracle of another day ending.

He sees his phone. He is somewhere else. Not here and now.

Both are sitting in the presence of something extraordinary. But only one is experiencing it.

And here's what fascinates me... The sunset doesn't care who's watching. It doesn't shine brighter for the attentive one. It doesn't withhold its beauty from the distracted one.

It's the same gift, offered to both without condition.

Which means the difference between an ordinary evening and an extraordinary one was never in the sky.

It wasn't in the sunset.

It was in the attention.

I wonder how often we do this. How many moments of beauty, wonder, love, and connection pass right before our eyes while our minds are somewhere else.

How much of our lives are we missing while we're busy looking at something else?

Maybe the sacred isn't something we have to travel somewhere to find. Maybe it's been right here all along, quietly waiting for us to notice.

The most available doorway to awe is the one we're already standing in.

Look up. Pay attention. Be here now.

We rarely know when we're experiencing something for the very last time.

The last time your child reaches up to be held.

The last time your dog greets you at the door.

The last time you hear your parent's voice, share a laugh with an old friend, or sit across the table from someone you love.

We don't recognize these moments as extraordinary because, at the time, they seem so ordinary.

Until one day, we'd give anything to experience them again.

I've lost people I dearly love, and one of the most profound lessons grief has taught me is this:

We don't have to wait until something is gone to recognize its value.

We can appreciate the ordinary moments while they're still happening.

We can put down our phones. Listen more closely. Hold a hand a little longer. Say the words we've been meaning to say.

Because someday, the moments we take for granted today will become the memories we treasure most.

What if we could recognize how precious these moments are while we're still living them?
