A visit to Kensington, January 2017

A wrought iron gate. A path through a mature communal garden square. Well tended shrubbery, comfortably prosperous foliage.

A black front door, neither neglected nor
pristine. A warmly lit, intimate living room in a modest red brick Edwardian cottage.

Books, bric-a-brac, some daffodils, a well used sofa, nothing fancy, some art but not too much.

A man in a chair. The chair in which he always sits. Not doing anything, not
speaking, not looking at anything, only smoking.

Round tortoiseshell glasses, grey suit,
green cardigan, sky blue long sleeved knitted three button polo shirt done all the way up, navy blue tie, navy blue and white silk handkerchief in the suit pocket, gold watch, brown leather strap.

The room and the scene could be 1959. A man in the winter of his life, grey suit, round glasses, smoking in the glow of filament lamps.

Until the eye goes down to the hems of the suit trousers. Neon socks, a modern textile. Slip on trainers, sleek, ergonomic.
The cyan tones of a California swimming pool, the sound of freedom and a bigger splash.

“You could be in Los Angeles now but you’re in England in January. How do you cope with it?”

“I try to laugh at least twice a day. That helps.”

Marina Hyde - ‘Always On’

‘The longer we go on today the more camp I’m likely to get.’

‘You and me, both,’

A commission from Goalhanger Studios to shoot a launch campaign and publicity portraits of broadcaster, writer and podcaster Marina Hyde to support her new platform, ‘ALWAYS ON’, which will encompass video, audio and written work.

The driving idea behind the title is that Marina, despite her attempts to switch off from the news, is incapable of not having something to say about the world we live in, most days.

As Marina says, ‘I’ve always thought that taking the news seriously doesn’t mean you can’t take it humorously. In fact, in these arguably dark times in the news vortex, we need jokes more than ever. So honestly, I want this place to be fun, lively, mischievous and – occasionally – just an absolute drive-by shooting on a topic. We all know that sometimes nothing else will do.’

Thanks to Marina for being such a brilliant dance partner. And all at Goalhanger for having me along - @alistairdixon @createdbydom @domwjohnson @samoakley23 @aussiestevo

It was a long day of stills and motion with the motion team being directed brilliantly by @isolde.penwarden

David in Madrid

For most of his adult life David Silva has been answering the same questions:

“What’s your all-time favourite goal? Best game? Best player?”

At 14 Silva left Gran Canaria to join the Valencia youth academy.

“You’re alone and you have to compete. You become an adult very fast. I only saw my parents a few times a year. We lived there, we ate there, we trained there.”

From there he ended up as one of the all time greats at Manchester City for 10 years, as well as fulfilling the ultimate achievement winning the World Cup with Spain.

Now, though, his full time career is as a winemaker, producing under the label of Tamerán with his friend, winemaker Jonathan García Lima, at the vineyard he bought on the island of his birth in 2018.

Asking him about wine and food, the answers get longer.

“In seven years in wine I’ve made more friends than I did in twenty years in football.”

Why?

”In wine you share things. You share food, you share wine and you share conversation. In football you compete.”

For this story for Noble Rot magazine David spent two days taking us around his favourite places to eat and drink in Madrid. Always arriving at the designated time with a couple of tasty bottles from his home cellar tucked into his pockets. A modest, gracious man who spent all his time making sure that we got to also experience what he loves about those places.

Indeed, all he did was share.

Read the full story in Noble Rot and find out the very best places to enjoy the Madrid experience. You won’t be disappointed.

Nice one.

Just been reminded of the greatest response I’ve ever received from a subject following the publication of a portrait. To receive any feedback ever is extremely rare, it virtually never happens. We meet, I photograph them, they leave. That’s usually the extent of the experience and in all likelihood we never meet again.

However, in 2017 I photographed the architect John Pawson, famed for his minimalist approach, at the newly launched Design Museum in Kensington.

Some time after publication I received the email from him that you can see in the second slide here. Swipe.

I’ve photographed Sharon Horgan three times. This was the first time, in 2010, when she gamely came all the way over to my studio in Ladbroke Grove from Hackney to take part in a project that involved photographing 140 people that I had met on Twitter, where she went by the handle of ‘realsharhorgan’

From the east she brought the perfect demonstration of ‘Hoxton Toe’ - the ability to stand with your feet pointed inwards like a new born foal raised entirely on a diet of The Libertines and American Apparel adverts. (Slide 2)

Heady days.

She is also, according to my wife, the coolest person I have ever photographed,

“And I include Kris Kristofferson in that.”

Watch ‘Youth’, her new show on Sky. The woman is a genius.

See slide 4 for the final Twitter piece: ‘ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY CHARACTERS’. Sharon is 2nd row from bottom, 5th from right.

I went to see the ‘Oasis: Don’t Look Back In Anger’ film last night and what a ride it was. Enormo shout out to the film makers, who wrung every last drop of joy and emotion from it. An absolute master class in documentary cinematography, editing, sound, contrast, light, dark, the full tool bag. The idea to film the pre-tour rehearsals only with static parked cameras and have no film crew in the room was a master stroke. Pure observation. The idea to commission different cinematographers to document the gigs in each country was a clever way to bring literal fresh eyes to it every day. The amount of time that the film devotes to observing the fans and the scenes around each gig shows how profoundly the relationship between band and audience is a two way street. And as Liam says at the end, something along the lines of, ‘Get in, do your thing as well as you can, and don’t be a c***.’

Words to live by in these times, and it made me fall in love with them all over again.

These pictures were from the days long before any of this came to pass. Brighton, December 29th 1994. Great days indeed. by @chrisfloyd

New: CHEF’S TABLE”, 2001 - ANTHONY BOURDAIN & CHRIS FLOYD

“ I photographed Tony about a year after his book ‘Kitchen Confidential’ was published. These were taken at Les Halles on Park Avenue South. I didn’t know much about him. I had assumed that he was going to be some gobby big mouth with a book to sell. BUT.... within 5 minutes of meeting him I realised that this guy was special. A date with Tony was something to relish. The man had a hell of a soul. I miss that.” Chris Floyd

It’s world photography day, so here’s a self portrait (the word ‘selfie’ had not yet been invented) from 1990. I was 21 and despite my intense ambition to break into the photography game I had yet to achieve barely a footstep in the right direction, apart from a few weeks of assisting a theatrical photographer in Notting Hill who sacked me for my inability to load film on to the metal dark room spools without getting kinks in the film. When he interviewed me he asked me if I could load and process film using the metal spools. I replied in all honesty that I could, assuming that they were the same as the plastic spools I’d been using at college. I found out soon enough that they were not the same and required a different technique, which is difficult to learn in the dark. After 6 weeks of patiently tolerating my incompetence he gave me my cards. So this is me, then, a short time after being shown the door. The scratches all over the print represent my frustration at the lost opportunity. Two steps forward, one step back. Setbacks and comebacks. Game of life. Snakes and ladders. It’s still like that now. You’ve just got to keep on keeping on and remember that wisdom is just a big collection of mistakes. Shot on my Bronica SQ and processed in a darkroom with plastic spools. by @chrisfloyd
