PAUL MCCARTNEY “CONTACT SHEET”, 2003 - Chris Floy
This was taken just days after the invasion of Iraq had begun.

Chris Floyd arrived at the session with a specific idea of what he wanted. McCartney as the man who kept The Beatles on course. Disciplined. Focused. The ambitious grammar school boy who never stopped. But McCartney was too jokey, too light. ‘And out of my mouth, meant more in dry jest than anything else, came the words, “Not when there’s a war on, Paul.” And like that, it was all there.

Two quick clicks of the shutter. A wave settling into shore. Everything Floyd had hoped for in the frame.

2026 has been a Wings year — the documentary Man On The Run on Amazon Prime, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame exhibition in Cleveland. A reminder of what that chapter of his career actually was. Not a footnote. A body of work.

Limited edition print, signed and numbered by Chris Floyd.

New: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Respect The City
San Francisco, April 2003. Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a month out from Fever to Tell and Chris Floyd is there with them.
It was a particular moment. A New York band on the rise, Karen O already one of the most compelling performers in rock, the record about to do what it did. Maps had not yet become Maps. Y Control had not yet become Y Control. Floyd caught them at the exact point before everything shifted.

Twenty years on and the band are still finding new ways to move. Hidden in Pieces, a 22-minute black-and-white short film recently announced, is the latest. Dreamlike, unhurried, entirely on their own terms. The same instinct that ran through the records, expressed differently.

This photograph is from the “Respect The City” series, 2003.

Taste reveals itself in the choices one makes repeatedly. In what one wears, the places one returns to, the things one looks after, and the companion whose place was never in question.

I discovered @jacksavoretti by accident in 2021, when YouTube served me a live performance of Breaking the Rules. I stayed for the voice. Then I started listening properly.

Five years later, I started wondering about something rather different: how does an artist build a twenty-year career with five UK Top 10 albums and two No. 1s, without ever having a Top 40 single?

The answer turned out to involve Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Italian songwriting, a deliberate refusal to make the same record twice – and rather more reinvention than I expected when I started researching this piece.
My new longread, The Art of Not Repeating Yourself – Twenty Years of Jack Savoretti, is now on The Coffee Girl’s Adventures.

Happy birthday Liam Gallagher. 54 today.
That voice, that stance, that crackling sense of humour and absolute refusal to be anything other than exactly who he is. From the council estates of Manchester to Knebworth, to the biggest rock reunion that took over every stadium in the world in 2025. A whole new generation finally got to see what all the fuss was about.

They understood immediately.

There has never been anyone quite like him. Long may it continue.
