I’m gearing up to return to the East Ranga in three weeks. The lodge has offered me two more rods, which had a deposit of £2,900 on them, but the original guests can’t attend. As a result, I have another two rods available at a super discounted price for four or six days of fishing starting on August 22nd. These rods can also be shared. I have two spare rods available on two of my Iceland trips this year on the East Rangá River.

📅 3–7 July

I’ve been lucky enough to holiday and fish in the Maldives on a few occasions. It’s been two years since I was last here, and the noticeable difference in the amount of fish on the reef is unbelievable. Although there are still loads of fish around, there definitely seems to be a decline.

Global warming is obviously having a major impact on the world. Looking at some of these reefs, they appear to be dying away, with significant coral bleaching and damage clearly visible.

It’s sad to see such a noticeable change in only two years.

If the Maldives is on your bucket list, I’d certainly recommend experiencing it. These reefs and the incredible marine life they support are under increasing pressure, and it really brings home how vulnerable this environment is. It is an amazing place to holiday, fish and snorkel.

Flats fishing is exhilarating. Wading, watching for movement, then trying to get a fly in front of a target in tricky conditions often with only five seconds to make the shot count, plus the challenge of the wind and handling your line when you’re often chest deep in water or in the surf zone, there’s plenty to contend with. But when the plan comes together, it’s some of the best fly fishing you will ever experience.

Not the biggest bluefin trevally, but great fun when you both connect at the same time.
Even at this size, their speed and strength are incredible. Pound for pound, they’re one seriously powerful fish. 🎣

My first ever island trevally! Found around the Maldives lagoons and outer reefs, this species is scientifically known as Ferdauia orthogrammus.

This one was eager to take a shrimp pattern tied for me by the very talented @rickvarley

A great day out on the boat at Blithfield Reservoir! The fishing was tough, but it was a cracking day on the water nonetheless!

A big thank you to the editorial team at FFI’s The Loop magazine for publishing my article on Micro Salmon Flies.

It’s a subject I’ve become increasingly passionate about after seeing just how effective these tiny patterns can be for Atlantic salmon.

Low, coloured water made for some tricky fishing conditions today, but it was great to be back out on the River Derwent at Chatsworth with @bertie55.bs

We had the whole river to ourselves and never saw another soul all day. Not many big fish showing today? perhaps they’ve all gone to the Chatsworth Country Fair! 😂

Still, brilliant to be back out on such a beautiful stretch of water.

James Bull watched one of my demonstrations at the English Game Fair this year and afterwards asked if he could book in for some casting tuition.

We managed to fit in a couple of lessons before his trip, and the improvement in his casting was fantastic.

Now James is out on the West Rangá in Iceland, putting all that hard work into practice and catching stunning salmon like this one.

Well done, James, your hard work has certainly paid off! 🎣👏

If you’re planning a destination fishing trip, one of the best pieces of advice I can give is to get some tuition from a professional casting instructor before you go.

A little preparation beforehand can make a huge difference when you finally step onto the river and help you make the most of every opportunity.

Prepare. Practise. Then reap the rewards. 🎣
