I'm tense and nervous and I can't relax. My books: Black Punk Now, Black Card, Zero Fade. 📚

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Black Punk Now got its first review, and it's a nice one!

"With graphics, short stories, lyrics, conversations, commentary, and notes on how capitalism naturally tries to co-opt cultural scenes and how Black punks naturally resist it, the anthology is a cornucopia of righteous resistance, both fun to read and energetically provocative." ⭐ @kirkus_reviews

I was lucky to work with a black editor, Mensah Demary, on my novel Black Card. NPR called Black Card "searingly hilarious" and listed it as a best book of 2019. Preorder the paperback from my local, black-owned bookstore Eso Won via the link in my bio. Here are a few words from Mensah: "Richmond, VA, confederate statues and all, is the setting of Chris L. Terry’s Black Card, a brilliant, provocative novel you should add to your reading lists; preorder the paperback." taken in Monument Avenue by @chrislterry

You *know* my little lit-punk ass wanted nothing more than to talk about Cometbus at an all-night diner.

I wrote about one of my favorite songs, Jawbreaker's "Jinx Removing," for the homie Gala Mukomolova's Substack, THE LAST MIXTAPE. Link in a mall trash can, stuck to a Sbarro slice box.

I am heartbroken to share that my beloved cat Wallace has passed away at 17. He went from alley cat to lap cat, and was a wonderful companion to my family. The house feels big, dark, and empty without him. I miss calling him the second I walk in the door, having him lie on my legs while I watch TV, his face ramming my laptop, and even him meowing his head off when I bring home a rotisserie chicken. I look forward to finding his hair on my clothes and furniture for years to come. ❤️🐈 by @chrislterry

Played my first punk show 30 years ago today, 9/30/95 on the outskirts of Richmond, VA, at the James River High School battle of the bands. Our drummer Joey went to school there. That's me on the mic, and the homie Brendan on guitar. Before the show, we were extras in a video by Beavis & Butthead's favorite band, Gwar. The song's called "Meat Sandwich" and, in the video, Brendan eats a rat (as one does) and I'm in the stands cheering while Oderus from Gwar dunks on Jesus in a one-on-one basketball game. It was a legendary day, even if, in a shocking upset, Flesh Eating Creeps lost the battle to a jam band. I still talk to a few people in this pic, and the show that night was the start of something special that continues to ripple through my life today. Photographer unknown. Slide 2 is a still from "Meat Sandwich." taken in James River High School (Chesterfield County, Virginia) by @chrislterry

Wound down a transformative year of teaching at UC San Diego. Thanks to everyone who made the 5am commute a reward, especially the students who came by on my last day with kind words and pastries. Next up, I'm proud to share that I'll be joining the faculty at University of Maryland Baltimore County as an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing. The dream job...with an even longer commute! I'll be on the East Coast starting in late August.
