🎶 So ist der Zauber, der mich dir verbunden ✨

a sweet memory from our LOHENGRIN in Budapest two weeks ago @operabudapest 🩷 full aria on YouTube 📽️

cond. @martin.rajna / dir. @amuraisam

“In the title role, we encountered an exciting artist in Christopher Sokolowski. The only 34-year-old American tenor offered us a fusion of two utterly contrasting vocal worlds: the noble lyricism of Sándor Kónya and the untamed passion of James King at once. Sokolowski made use of every extreme, exploiting the full range of opposites. The end of the bridal chamber scene grew astonishingly heated thanks to Sokolowski, and his Lohengrin reacted to Elsa’s questions about his origins with an almost unheard-of desperation. This gave the entire final scene tremendous dramatic momentum, which the tenor maintained throughout both the Grail Narrative and the Farewell.” — Café Momus

🦁 throwback to some roaring last week with the terrific @sinfonieorchesterstgallen under Modestas Pitrenas in Mahler’s DAS LIED VON DER ERDE 🦁 always a literal thrill to be amid the tremendous power of Mahler’s orchestration—a really otherworldly combination with this extremely evocative poetry:

Im Mondschein auf den Gräbern
hockt eine wildgespenstische Gestalt -
Ein Aff ist’s! Hört ihr, wie sein Heulen hinausgellt in den süßen Duft des Lebens!
//
In the moonlight, on the graves,
perches a wild, ghostly figure.
It is an ape! Do you hear how its howling shrieks outward into the sweet scent of life? taken in Tonhalle St. Gallen by @chrisoko7

“The revelation Christopher Sokolowski: a last-minute replacement, the American tenor triumphs in Antwerp, where he displays an undeniable charisma. It is not every day that one witnesses the emergence of a singer of real stature — and even more rarely, that of a genuine Heldentenor. This 34-year-old American delivered a truly authentic role debut. He possesses both the physical elegance and the maturity required. With a slightly baritonal, somewhat dark timbre reminiscent of @tenorkaufmann , the young tenor displayed the full splendor of his voice during the Act II duet, at the moment of the fatal kiss that awakens his neuroses”. — @classicamag

this iconic scene with Kundry in Wagner’s PARSIFAL is one of the great “mad scenes” of the repertoire, as a flood of physical pain, agony, lust, sorrow, passion, guilt, and need for redemption take over this “poor fool” 💔

we had our 9th and final performance of Parsifal last week in Antwerp at @operaballetvlaanderen and I will be sharing some clips from this brilliant production by @s_k_kennedy and @markus_selg starting with of course the outburst of “Amfortas! die Wunde!” which can be seen in its entirety on my YouTube channel (link in bio) 🤗

The planned post of my September and October performance dates here in San Francisco must now unfortunately begin with bad news: our concert of arias this afternoon in Golden Gate Park, conducted by @sfopera music director Eun Sun Kim, has been cancelled due to the orchestral strike. I know many of you were looking forward to this, and I'm sorry to share the disappointing news.

Our run of Mary, Queen of Scots remains scheduled to premiere on September 20, with further dates below:

🎶 dies Alles—hab ich nun geträumt? No, I have one more update for next season that I am absolutely elated and emotional to finally share…

I am very honored to make my debut at the Bayreuther Festspiele next summer in a new production of Parsifal directed by Ersan Mondtag and conducted by Christian Thielemann.

To make my debut at Bayreuth in such a role, in the “temple” where the opera was born, is a tremendous responsibility, and one that I really look forward to with great excitement. 🤍🤍🤍 SEE YOU THERE!

Looking back at 2025/26, another exciting season for Christopher Sokolowski.

The critics declared "a new Parsifal is born" after his surprise debut at Opera Vlaanderen in September, "the revelation of this production". His successful season continued from there, with “triumphant” performances as Lohengrin, and debuts as Narraboth in Salome and the Shepherd in Król Roger. The unanimous acclaim continued to flow, "a colossal Heldentenor" in the making, his "ideal lyric brilliance" and "heroic resonance", and his Shepherd's “magnetic presence and smooth, beguiling" tenor were singled out.
“Sokolowski possesses all the qualities of a Wagnerian tenor: firm yet sufficiently supple, radiant and well-focused but never nasal, the voice first captivates in powerful, broad high notes.”

Forum Opera, October 2025

“Special mention goes to the young Wagnerian tenor Christopher Sokolowski, making his debut as Narraboth, who opened the opera with ideal lyric brilliance.”
El Pais, April 2026

Christopher Sokolowski’s Narraboth illuminated the first scenes with his impassioned pleas.”
Opera Magazine, August 2026

“Vocally, his voice combines the clarity and power needed to rise above the orchestra effortlessly. Physically, his stage presence was at once innocent and charismatic, perfectly attuned to the journey of the ‘pure fool’ in search of compassion. His evolution, from candid rawness to redemptive wisdom, was a model of dramatic intelligence.”

Scherzo Editorial, October 2025

“A new Parsifal was born.…The evening’s great triumph was Sokolowski’s personal success, which won unanimous agreement .. vocally he impressed with expressiveness, chameleon-like sensitivity, and fidelity to the character. An artist with a strong natural interpretive instinct, and one to keep a close eye on.”

"This year marks the centennial of the opera’s premiere. Yet productions remain rare: there are only two confirmed stagings this year, one in Poland and the other at Des Moines Metro Opera. The Des Moines production shows why the work deserves wider circulation."

Thank you to critic Zach Carstensen of Seen and Heard International for joining us in Iowa to pen a thoughtful and compelling review of our new production of Szymanowski's KING ROGER. Click the link in bio to read the review of this seldom-performed Polish masterpiece in full. by @chrisoko7

so excited to have our premiere tonight of Szymanowski’s Król Roger here at Des Moines Metro Opera. this piece may be short, but it is as dense as the big bang, and when they say it takes a village, this is what they mean. Bravi to the 100s of people on and off stage who made this brilliant production of Chas Rader-Shieber & team come to life: from the scenic design of Jimmy Stubbs, to the costume designs of Robert Perdziola (special shout out to Colin Jones for his outstanding construction of Robert’s golden chains for the Shepherd in act 2), the musical direction of David Neely with Cris Frisco at his side and the incredible orchestra, the lighting design of Connie Yun, the HMU of Brittany Rappise and her team, the chorus direction of Lisa Hasson, the choreography of Isaac Martin Lerner, the Polish guidance of Piotr Wisniewski and the support of pianist Tessa Hartle: this production is a feast of all the senses spearheaded by Chas’ magical brain. Thank you to Des Moines Metro Opera for making this all come together with such ambition and courage.
