you never know when it will be the last time …
this was the last time she made us waffles. one of the few recipes she still enjoyed whipping up in her 90’s. meme would have been 97 today.
i got the sudden urge to visit her and flew from new york to florida on a whim, even though i had just been there to visit about a month prior. it felt important that i go. i didn’t realize it would be the last time i would see her, or that i would be her last visitor … she passed away a few weeks later.
meme always enjoyed doing things herself, she kept a beautiful home, was still driving (to my sometimes horror 😬) and loved wine and ice cream more than anyone i know. she lived in new york and paris as a model when she was young and had stories that sometimes felt like the movies ~ but remained humble pie as the girl born in toledo ohio.
i’ll miss her as long as im here & i sure am grateful for every moment together … and that on our last day together i finally got to make her the waffles 🧇 it was my turn to show her that kind of love she was always giving away to all of us lucky enough to receive it.

6 months ago today i left new york🗽

i wasn’t sure where to, all i knew was i had spent half my life in NYC & it was just time. since then a whirlwind of things have happened & somehow i ended up in Africa (more on that later) …

& as i reflect back on new york and everything she gave to me over the span of the 20 years of living there, i can only be grateful for all the beautiful experiences & people who made my life there so rich.

to me new york city is an amalgamation of the rare, the beautiful, the creative & even the messy which all come together to create an expression which simply can’t be replicated elsewhere… it’s a place where everyone lives piled on top of each other, packed into restaurants & subway trains. a place where community still stands for something, anonymity is yours any day you want it & literally any type of food craving can be satisfied 24 hours a day 🥡🥢

>>>i know that what was imprinted on me during my time in new york is completely sacred ~ what happened there for me on a soul level was pure expansion & im grateful for all of it.

so many versions of myself were born & died in new york in order for me to follow my life path and evolve along with it …leaving me with just one thought:

2 months ago i packed a carry on bag for a festival in tunisia … i thought i was coming for a long weekend to discover something new.

2 months later i never took my return flight & i still have only a carry on bag of clothes >>> but ive created more memories here in tunisia than i could have ever dreamed of.

im embracing this chapter and letting it unfold as it wants to. i don’t have a recipe or a plan other than to follow my heart, love the people that love me & continue to let life surprise me at all the little things that end up being so big ❤️ taken in All Around Tunisia by @christiecush

it was never in my plans to come here … not even on my radar. i ended up here by chance, by an invitation … not knowing how my heart would transform here ~ or how the people would impact my human experience. i’ve met so many beautiful souls here, my heart has been captured and enraptured.
