A long time client, who I am also proud to call a friend, requested a complete closet clean out session while I was in town, which we haven’t done since our first session in 2015. We started around 11/11:30 and wrapped at 4. We went through everything.

The important thing for me to remember as a personal stylist is the range of emotions that can come up for my clients when doing a deep cleansing of their closet. It’s everything from identifying pieces that they had hope for to maybe the way they imagined themselves being, plus there is always the money aspect of looking at a pile of clothes that they spent money on but are now donating or selling.

But after two decades of working with women in this capacity, I know that for the most part, going forward after the purge, they feel a huge sense of relief afterwards, because holding onto things that no longer reflect your current self, can be a difficult thing to face and create. An unaligned closet can create an invisible kind of fatigue. You may not consciously realize it, but every time you open the closet door, and you find yourself sifting through things that don’t fit, don’t feel like you anymore, carry guilt, or represent a version of yourself you’ve moved on from, that’s a lot of mental noise before you’ve even gotten dressed.

I plan to make a video about this to share more of my process, but in the meantime, here are some photos she snapped of me today in the midst of the separating portion, along with me next to the giant pile of clothing she will selling on @thredup. The first photo especially encapsulates how I feel about the work I do with the clients I have. Big love to you S. You rocked it today.🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻 taken in New York, New York by @christine__cameron

Hi. So question for you…have you guys recently tried on the clothes hanging in your closet lately? Like the stuff that you assume still works or that you think you like but don’t often wear? Those clothes?

Because I did yesterday, and I was in for quite a surprise.

You’d think because I help women with their closets for a living that I’d be immune to this (I’m not). Or that my closet would be perfectly edited all the time. (It isn’t). But for the most part, I try to prioritize staying on top of it.

This week I dug a little deeper and uncovered a handful of pieces I’d been assuming were still reflective of my style, when in reality, they just weren’t me anymore.

So circling back to you guys…when is the last time you actually tried your clothes on?

Not just looked at them.
Not just remembered them.
Actually tried them on.

Because we convince ourselves we know what’s in our closet.

“I love that top.”
“Those jeans definitely still fit.”

But, do they?

Bodies change. Style evolves. Our preferences shift. Sometimes there are versions of ourselves hanging in our closets that are no longer who we are—they’re just memories. And that’s okay. That’s life.

But in my opinion, your closet is healthiest when it’s a reflection of who you are today, not collecting versions of who you used to be.

So ask yourself: Is your closet collecting or reflecting?

To start the process, I like to put on a playlist, begin trying things on, and see what happens. It might be uncomfortable at first, but start small with even a few pieces a day, and you’ll quickly figure out what’s working, what isn’t, and what no longer feels like you.

With fall right around the corner, this is the perfect time to get ahead of your closet instead of scrambling when the seasons change.

And if you’d rather not do it alone and would love some support, that’s where I come in. I help women clean out their closets, rediscover what they love, and build wardrobes that actually reflect who they are today.

If you’ve been putting off your closet for months, send me a DM and let’s see if working together is the right fit. 🫶🏻

She’s going through it. 😬💀

I filmed this earlier in the week and decided I wasn’t going to post it since the majority of the video didn’t record, and the whole point was to share all my favorite products I use when getting ready quickly etc etc but then I thought, eh, still a cute look and hit publish. by @christine__cameron

The news continues to be depressing as hell, and my energy feels zapped. So to boost my mood I decided to wear some color to my podiatrist’s appointment to pick up my orthotics.🤓 Loved breaking out this cute vegetable sweater for the first time and will continue to look for the small joys in life. P.S. You can thank @lacystafford for finding this gem. 🫶🏻🥕🌽🥬 by @christine__cameron

Get ready with me to go to a friend’s house for dinner!

Ok so yes, I could have easily just wore my comfy pants and sweatshirt tonight, but that’s the thing about Seattle. It is almost too easy to always dress down, and that is totally fine! I am just a person that also loves putting together an outfit and feeling styled. It makes me feel good and pulled together, even if I’m sitting in my friend’s backyard for the evening.

Also, I’m obsessed with my new hat. As a woman who lived in New York just shy of 15 years, I ordered this so fast after seeing it online. I based my whole outfit around it so that it would be the star of the show. It was designed by @prinkshop x @shopsocialgoods, which benefits Win (Women in Need), the largest provider of shelter and critical services for homeless women and their children in New York City.❤️

Just a millennial girl and her toxic airport trait: checking the gate 47 times to make sure it didn’t somehow change while I was having a glass of wine. 💀🍷✈️

Anyone else?

Unsolicited advice from a personal stylist…

Stop waiting for the “right time” to wear the thing.

Something I’ve noticed over the years, both in my own closet and while working in other people’s, is that a lot of the pieces that still have tags on them are “someday when” pieces.

Someday when I go on that trip.
Someday when I’m in the right city.
Someday when I have the right occasion.
Someday when the vibe makes sense.

And I am absolutely still guilty of doing this.

I love coordinating my outfits with a trip, a city, a restaurant, a vibe. And these pants definitely give off Mediterranean vacation vibes. But I don’t currently have one of those planned so truthfully, up until yesterday, I was about to retire these pants and top back into the closet in hopes of wearing them somewhere fun, next summer.

But then I took my own advice, and instead of waiting for the imaginary perfect place to wear them, I wore them somewhere fun — to dinner at a super cute, girlie-pop spot with friends.

And you know what? I felt great. And I was so happy I didn’t wait for the “right occasion” to wear them.

Sometimes the right occasion is just deciding you want to wear the thing.💁🏼‍♀️
