CAST SPOTLIGHT: CHRISTOPHER TONKIN — DON GIOVANNI He's back. Christopher Tonkin flew in from Germany to reprise the role he first sang with Melbourne Opera in 2006. Some things are worth coming home for. "We're still dealing with the same patriarchal, dominance-based, hierarchical structures today as Mozart was in his time. And that is what Giovanni represents, that tiny fraction of humanity for whom the system works, while the rest of us are constrained by it. That's why something like Don Giovanni is so powerful, and why it feels so urgent to be putting it on right now." Wow. Siegfried and Roy! That was one hell of a ride. It’s taken me a minute to gather myself and write a post that can encompass the fullness of what just happened and what we achieved! I think it will be a case of referring to life as pre-S&R and post-S&R! 🤣 Thanks to the inimitable Con Costi and Luke di Somma for their trust in giving me this baby to create, also to Olivia Ansell, Lauren Peters, Chanelle Muirhead and Sydney Festival for making it happen, to the music staff for keeping us afloat and also to my agent Paull-Anthony Keightley for being there beside me at every turn. But most of all thank you to my onstage husband, Kanen Breen, for being alongside me and being everything one could ever want when creating a role of this magnitude. I already had deep respect for this man, but after this, he has redefined the word. Love you, my dear friend. You just keep showing us how it’s done, again and again and again, no matter the situation. Thanks also to my other dear onstage colleagues and back stage colleagues. I’m going to miss you! The friendships I deepened from existing associations and the new ones formed will hold for a long time…we bonded in this one! Till next time!! taken in Sydney Theatre Company by @christopher.tonkin

What an amazing week it was last week in Singapore singing the mighty baritone part in Orff’s Carmina Burana. What a piece!! The collaboration of @melbournesymphonyorchestra and @singaporesymphony made for incredible music, and singing alongside @siobhanstagg and @andrewfgoodwin with maestro extraordinaire @jaime_martin_conductor was a dream…not to mention the extraordinary Singapore public! Thank you Singapore!! taken in Esplanade Concert Hall by @christopher.tonkin

I’m thrilled to be singing this role once again in Cav/Pag but this time with the magnificent West Australian Opera and in this gorgeous Andrew Sinclair production.
