Another fantastic Mark Anderson memorial competition in the books at Kenauk Nature! This is always a special event, it’s a treat to see so many longtime friends in one place and to fish at such a terrific venue, it makes for a great close to the year’s competition season. This year we were fortunate to win the team silver medal, despite our good friend and teammate Morgan having to withdraw with the flu last minute I’m very proud of my teammates for staying tough and earning this one all the same! Massive congrats to teammates Dan Steiner and Julio Rodriguez for a 2nd and 4th place finish individually, and to Adam for coming out on short notice and fishing hard the whole weekend to push us over the finish line. Congrats as well to all the other medalists and teams!

Thanks to Jim, Ionut, Dan, Colin, Ivo and Byron for the pics!!

Quick spey casting tip! Make sure to pay attention to and experiment with your running line overhang length when spey casting shooting heads. The amount that will work best for you depends on your stroke length, head length, head length and wading depth, you generally have up to 2-3’ of wiggle room that can greatly affect your casting.

Quick swing tip for all you steelheaders! Don't get caught in the trap of thinking that we always need to be actively slowing our fly down, often in early fall it's actually the exact opposite that we want! In slow pools and glides when the water is warm don't be shy about casting broadside to speed up your swing and even strip your fly to add pace to it. Remember that swinging a fly only works because the movement we impart implies life in a swimming baitfish/crayfish/insect etc. give it a shot and good luck!

It's been a great bass season! I love these really dark fish when they're up shallow, you can see them from a mile away!

Trout fishing is back on!! Cool nights have many rivers (Grand River excepted) at safe fishable temperatures throughout morning and early afternoon hours. With more cool weather in the forecast we'll likely be clear for full day trout fishing again in the next weeks!

Is there anything as satisfying as watching a bass inhale your offering as soon as it hits the water?

Sunny days, bass and a view, what could be better?!
