$This complex optical illusion is called a Fata Morgana, a specialized type of superior mirage. It happens when a layer of significantly warmer air rests directly above a layer of dense, cold air near the water or ground surface, creating a severe thermal inversion and an atmospheric duct that acts like a distorted refractive lens. taken in Lincolnville, Maine by @christophermir$
