KATHARINE HAMNETT: THE WOMAN WHO MADE FASHION SPEAK BY CHRISTOPHER SIMS

For over four decades, Hamnett has used fashion not simply to dress people, but to communicate with them. Her oversized white T-shirts, carrying stark black slogans in uncompromising type, became some of the most recognisable garments of the twentieth century. Their brilliance lay not in their cut or construction, but in their clarity. Fashion had found its voice, and it spoke in capital letters.

What is perhaps most unsettling is how little those messages have aged.

As Katherine talks, I find myself thinking less about her career than about Britain itself.

The Britain that produced her.
The Britain that believed art schools mattered.
That considered public education an investment rather than a luxury.
That accepted experimentation as something valuable in its own right.

Along with @intersportfr I will be reviewing their latest in house skies.

A week of wall to wall sunshine, blue skies and quiet slopes. Conditions great, but we are now ready for a hard dump of snow to arrive, as the runs are getting hard, icy with a sprinkling of dusty snow on the surface.

FISCHER THE CURVE
With a firm hold on the ground, these skies really do take controlling and you need to team up with them, step up to their ferocious attitude as they take no prisoners. Once we made a plan, and they let me know they were the boss, and I was working on their terms, we got on pretty well and the mission began.

The ski season has opened to lavish conditions of heavy snow. And on day 2 we received crystal blue skies ❤️.
I will be reviewing skis again with @intersport in the French Alps #lesmenuires @les3vallees_officiel during the ski season 2025-26 for @so.edited.co magazine.

To say I was excited to run with ‘the classic French ski’ Rossignol HERO LTD is an understatement. As of yet I had not had the pleasure, and I was slightly nervous they wouldn’t live up to their ‘HERO’ status. Or I was just not that good a skier, and these legendary skies would simply be wasted on me and demand I get my skinny legs off them! I had a difficult nights sleep in anticipation…

Providing more work for an experienced skier, these will be good off piste, feel slightly loose on thinner conditions and are in need of being tamed. I would not advise for integmidate skiers as they need a lot of work needed, but if you are in the game for some real training, these are your bad boys!

People are, have always been my fascination as a creative and artist.
The human form, how it curves between the feminine and the masculine.

The emotion stored within the frame of one’s isolated planet the body and mind.

How the human can convey power, sadness, guard, courage, contempt, pleasure, gratitude, satisfaction, tragedy through subtle positions.

The classics propelled emotions via the body form, while the expression of the face remained indiferente to ongoing calculations within.

Those creatures who convey little, yet whiteness and feel eternally, while conveying a visual appearance in a strictly organised arrangement of limbs, muscles, and well thought out angles.

A multitude of histories, emotions and feeling presented structurally for the entertainment of the individual, and in defiance of difficulties.

One of my most valuable possessions.
A portrait of my most valuable possessions, and my most loved beings.

The passing of time, and the passing of one of these lives. Portrait of Tommy and his daddies during the final weeks for his life.

I was told we looked deathly and scared here, as close as we were feeling during this period to that comment.

Adjusting my creatively from one medium to a more classical, simple and isolated procedure.

I’ve found a meditation and hypnotic process, and although very different to photographing fashion models, there was as I can see now a hypnotic connection between me and a model when we were in the mist of producing their form, relaying to the model, and the model communication back to me.

One item I miss about photographing models, is that moment when we would connect in a classical dialogue physically, then accepting my direction, and then momentarily becoming the classical form I desired.

Our beautiful models arrived as young quiet girls, and very quickly during shooting turned into couture dominatrix before our eyes. I love the Art of Fashion and its ability through creative direction, makeup and styling to subvert the establishment, alter reality, and for that time live in fantasy.
