Here’s what I want you to picture in my class (Wednesdays 5:30p in the Bienville room):

a scene partner listening to you. A small choice you can build on. Another chance after something doesn’t work. People making something together.

I wrote “reason to stay curious” in the margin while reading @morganhousel’s Same as Ever.

That might be one of the most important reminders I’ve found for teaching improv.

Experience is useful. Repetition is useful. Knowing what you’re doing is useful.

But there’s a weird point where expertise can turn into certainty.

You stop asking why.

You stop noticing the room.

You start assuming that because something worked 100 times, the 101st person needs the exact same thing.

I don’t want twenty years of teaching improv to make me less curious.

I want it to make me better at noticing what I still don’t know.

That’s the kind of improv room I’m interested in building.

The @openmicfromhell is the real deal. A reason to leave your house. A comedy experiment. Beautiful and bizarre. The show has existed for damn near 5 years but it took me 15 years to perfect it. I love what it has become.
