“the ocean is terrifying. I’s the closest embodiment to what eternity might look like. She can’t see the end of it or the bottom of it. She can’t see the darkness of its expanse, but she knows there are creatures who have to live in it. Who think it’s normal. She reaches out her hand and she touches it.” - Wedding People by Alison Espach I think in everything lifetime I’ll be drawn to the ocean but in this lifetime, the ocean, while expansive and scary, I think brings me a lot of peace because I like picturing my late grandparents and their parents and their parents’ parents (people I don’t know but people that played a part in my presence here), my dad and mom in their youth, my youth even, my grandpa, and my brother. It’s all tied to the ocean. And the years will bring change, no doubt, but the ocean is dependable and the singular tie that connects me to all of them. So I think all this love for all these people with no where to go. I think the ocean holds it for me, because it’s expansive and scary, but deep and constant. My brother, he’s there looking at the same water as me. And my grandma she’s on the other side too, somewhere picking shells like me, like we used to. And that brings me an insane amount of comfort. by @chroniclesofvea
one of the things I wrote in my 2026 bingo card was “take more pictures”… and really, i can take pictures anywhere and anytime because I have my camera and NYC, but there is no better place to check off a goal than while exploring another country. by @chroniclesofvea
I experienced loss in 2025 but looking back I don’t know that I was taking anything in honestly— more so that I was observing the journey my love ones endured. So, 2025 was the year I was an observer. I observed my grandma with her nasty battle with stage four pancreatic cancer. And the way it sucked the life out of her— my favorite goofball. Her final moments, I’m still processing because they were so undignified. She was fighting it, and I could only watch, really and occasionally apply Vaseline to her lips. She was strong through and through, and funny and so witty and street smart and chaotically good. That’s how I’ll remember her. And not only that. I waved my brother goodbye when he left for a couple months. And then goodbye again for another few months. And then AGAIN when he moved. That’s a different loss. And I’m proud and he’s so courageous and strong and brilliant. He’s alive and well, taking strides I have yet to take as his older sister but still, I grieve my childhood and no longer having my fellow middle child. Thank God for FaceTime. And our random weekend calls, I’ve answered at weddings and ice cream parlors and malls. I don’t care. I’d drop everything. I’m so grateful for my siblings. So it’s the an end of an era because the house feels smaller.. because it is in fact… lonelier, but I look at the moon a little differently nowadays. Maybe I only attached meaning to the moon because I need it to keep one foot in front of the other while grieving, but it does give me comfort to know I’m under the same moon as my brother, and I’m looking at the same moon my grandma looked at while walking along the shore. with that, fuck cancer. by @chroniclesofvea
