This mini print machine ended up being the most fun (and low key profitable) part of our display at our markets this summer! And yes, it’s really made from only a potato chip box, some hot glue, paper, a bamboo skewer and rubber bands…finished with a branded paint job by me.

I tried to capture just a few reactions at @taiwanfest.toronto at @harbourfrontcentre along the way and was very appreciative and surprised that many people volunteered to be on camera. I didn’t take any footage of the kids coming through with their allowance money but their reactions to this machine were so cute!

P.S. My little sister @candacechu13 is not really an engineer by training but has the patience and measuring skills of one.

When @alysutton_ reached out to me looking for a Toronto-based artist recommendation to black-and-white line sketch her wedding venue (the @acehoteltoronto), little did she know she would end up with this colourful whimsical painter volunteering herself!

To be honest, I think we were both a tiny bit nervous at first without any evidence of prior work, but somehow, were both 100% committed regardless.

The new-ish website is live for the season!!!! A lot of your favourites I tested out during the One of a Kind Show and at MUJI are now available for purchase online, and I’ve made a few more fun ones to add to the collections.

Just released today: “Big Love Elephants” for new baby greetings (pairs well with an elephant print) and my new favourite, very specific card, the “What a Turtle Nightmare”. You’ll think of a reason to send it one day and you’ll be glad you have it on hand.

*She’s not actually a carpenter by trade (or engineer lol) but self-taught herself to becoming a pretty good one over the years! 😊

For those of you who noticed our booth display at the @ooak_toronto show this past winter (and what you’ll see at @mujicanada this weekend), here is the behind-the-scenes of how it was all made. Even if we HAD the budget to order something really high-end, I don’t think anyone else could’ve understood the brief as well as @candacechu13. She’s not accepting custom orders (at the moment), but hopefully this serves as inspiration if you’re skilled enough to take a crack at it!

Budget breakdown (in CAD):
- Wooden boards, brackets and pieces from Home Depot (and some free scrap wood): $32.57
- Screws and other hardware: $2.40
- Clearance and sale vinyl from Michael’s: $4.75
- 2 yards of blue fabric: sourced from a previous project
- Reused rope and dowels: free
= $39.72

It’s happening! For two days this weekend, you’ll be able to visit @chuonthisstudio at @mujicanada’s Toronto Flagship, Muji Atrium! Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the Lunar New Year, and Family Day.

Those who have known me for awhile know that MUJI is one of my favourite stores of all time (the evidence in my closet, backpack and cabinets is overwhelming). I am so excited to be part of this #MUJICommunityMarket and hope to see a lot of you this weekend as well!

These reindeer were made from some reclaimed wood and fresh tree clippings from the backyard by “not actually an engineer” lil sis @candacechu13 and “dressed” by middle sis @31anc4.

It’s hard not to smile when you see them!

One of the most common pieces of advice I was given while preparing for the One of a Kind Show was that the food options were really limited. Of course, there were delicious things to sample in the “Flavours Section” and many treats gifted from friends and other exhibitors, but the actual “meal options” were literally just a few fast food trucks. So for an almost two-week all-day event, I knew I had to plan super intentionally for me and lil sis, as if I was prepping for a marathon (which is what it felt like at times).

I made slightly different variations of high-protein oatmeal for breakfast at home every day. Then for breakfast and lunch, I ensured every meal was high fibre, high protein, low spices/alliums (so as to not be worried about greeting customers with garlic breath etc.), and nothing too blood sugar-spiking. I tried to cook as many meals as I could while also timing out a few visits to Liberty Village and UberEats deliveries to the Enercare Centre when I knew work was going to be too busy.

It took a lot of time and effort, but man, do I feel better for having done it. Now that I’ve lived through it, I’ll pass on the same advice to anyone who is doing the show or any similar event - stay nourished out there!! 🙂 by @chuonthisstudio
