If the energy of the piece calls for it… give a Broadway performance! Move, use the space, fully commit to your physicality, be musical! It’s a musical!!!!

It’s particularly true if you’re going through college musical theatre program prescreen season right now:

Don’t make your performance small just to match the size of the screen!

Sure, if it’s an intimate piece then match that energy.

But don’t leave behind vital parts of your performance and personality when you hit the big red record button. You have full permission to really go for it 🙌

Peek behind the scenes for some at-home singing practice.

This was only my second time singing through the song (The Glamorous Life, cut from A Little Night Music), it’s one of those pieces I’ve “known” forever but never learned.

A lot of what I found difficult with this piece was:
👍the counting
👍the transitions (some unexpected ascending intervals—jumps from low notes to high notes—right at my “passaggio” or vocal break)
👍and getting the right tone that reads legit without getting too hooty OR too bright/nasal.

No big lesson to impart here, just a look behind the curtain! by @chwils

Let’s talk Vocal ROI. Is belting that note worth the effort, fatigue, and technical risk?

Sometimes, yes! But sometimes… absolutely not. 😂

Not every note needs your biggest, most expensive vocal choice. If you spend the whole song at a 10, you’ve got nowhere left to go when the moment actually calls for it. And we as the audience get fatigued listening to that much intensity for too long.

Save the belt for when the emotional return-on-investment is highest, you do NOT need to paint the whole song with it!

That’s vocal ROI: getting the biggest storytelling return without spending more voice than the moment is worth.

(I found myself saying this in so many lessons, I decided to pull one of those instances for all of you, you’re welcome! ☺️)

I keep having this conversation with women in their 30s 40s and 50s, and maybe it’s because I’m finding myself in the same place as well. Wondering if I can come back to myself as a singer after so much time away, not identifying as an artist.

This last year has been really transformational for me in that respect, and I feel like everywhere I turn I’m witnessing other women who are going through similar things. Or who at least *want* to be returning to that part of themselves. They know they have something to share and want to return to themselves as a singer.

Have you found yourself in this place? Did you take time away from performing or singing or identifying as a singer and are now wondering if it’s too late?

(Spoiler alert it’s definitely not too late… )

And you might have even better reasons and more significant meaning for your artistry now than you did in your 20s ❤️
