Cemetery Cleanup Workshop Canceled

Our cemetery cleanup workshop scheduled for Sunday, October 18, at 1 p.m. at United Colored American Cemetery has been canceled. Cold temperatures will leave the headstones too cold for the cleaning solution to work properly.

We’ll work to schedule another cleanup opportunity in the spring, when both the weather and the stones are warmer.

In the meantime, we encourage you to visit United Colored American Cemetery, enjoy its beautiful landscape, and reflect on the lives and stories represented there.

Thank you for your understanding and willingness to help care for this historic place. Stay tuned for a spring cleanup date! by @cincinnatipreservation

🎉 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐥 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔!

We're looking forward to welcoming attendees from across the region for a day of learning, networking, and meaningful conversation about the future of historic preservation.

And at the heart of the program: the unveiling of 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢'𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐧𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫.

In 𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐲𝐩𝐤𝐞𝐦𝐚'𝐬 own words: “The fact that 𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐬 speaks to the desirability of those neighborhoods but also belies the claim that historic districts are somehow deterrents to growth.”

📖 Join us for Terminology Tuesday, a series focused on architectural terminology. Each post provides a clear definition of a commonly used building term. A 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞 is a horizontal band of masonry that visually divides stories on a building. Cincinnati’s Italianate commercial and civic buildings often use stringcourses to emphasize vertical rhythm while clearly separating floors. This brick masonry former school building in Columbia Tusculum features a limestone stringcourse running between the second and third stories, do you see it connected to the window lintels on the second story?

The Wyandot Removal Trail is a series of historical markers through Ohio commemorating the removal of the Wyandot in 1843. The markers identify locations of Wyandot campsites during this journey and are collaboratively written by the Cultural Division of Wyandotte Nation and UC students and faculty.

The Lebanon marker is located in Cedar City Park and was the last city the Wyandot passed through before their final encampment in Sharonville.

The Noth Bend marker is located in William Henry Harrison Riverfront Park, where the Wyandots, now traveling on steamboats, paused to bid farewell to their Ohio homelands. by @cincinnatipreservation

📖 Welcome to Terminology Tuesday! Each week we define an architectural term you’ve probably walked past before. A 𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐤𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 is the solid panel below a storefront display window, traditionally made of wood, tile, or stone. Preserving original bulkheads helps maintain the historic character of Cincinnati’s commercial corridors. This Central Business District storefront features bulkheads below the glass on the storefront.

Every historic building has a story, and we love helping uncover it!

Cincinnati Preservation Executive Director Beth Johnson once again joined WVXU’s Bill Rinehart for “OKI Wanna Know” to help answer a listener’s question, this time about Belsaw, Thomas Sherlock’s former home in Clifton.

We love working with WVXU to share the stories behind the places that make Cincinnati special. And we love that listeners are so interested in our unique architecture and rich history. That curiosity helps build appreciation for the places and stories worth preserving.

Thank you to Bill and WVXU for keeping local history in the spotlight, and to everyone who keeps asking questions!
