London, through a designer’s lens.

A city walk turned into a lesson in design, culture, architecture, and visual storytelling. From the character-filled streets of Bloomsbury to the grandeur of the British Museum, the creative energy of Tottenham Court Road, and the city lights along the Embankment at blue hour — every stop had something to notice, capture, and remember.

Here’s a glimpse into chapter one of the Design Safari.

What happens when a simple wall becomes an experience of space, movement and discovery?
As part of the Cindrebay Design Safari — London, our participants visited the Serpentine Pavilion 2026, ‘a serpentine’, designed by Isabel Abascal and Alessandro Arienzo.
Inspired by the English ‘crinkle-crankle’ garden wall, the pavilion uses curved brickwork to explore the relationship between material, light, movement and spatial experience.
The visit also offered an opportunity to encounter the work of Venezuelan kinetic artist Jesús Rafael Soto, whose Pénétrable BBL Jaune invites visitors to engage with art through movement, perception and participation.
For our participants, the pavilion was more than an architectural landmark. It was an opportunity to reflect on how familiar materials and traditional building techniques can be reimagined to create new spatial experiences — and how architecture can move beyond being something we simply look at to become something we actively experience.

Showcasing Indian craft traditions and talent at global design stage

As part of the Cindrebay Design Safari — London, our students visited RAW Collaborative’s Design Intelligentsia at the iconic Shoreditch Town Hall, presented as part of Shoreditch Design Week and London Design Festival 2026.
Our sincere thanks to Tanvi Karia @tanvikaria , Founder of RAW Collaborative @raw_collaborative , for her vision in creating this platform and for giving our students the opportunity to experience South Asian design and craftsmanship in such a significant global context.
Bringing together 25+ independent studios, material innovators and makers from South Asia and its global diaspora, the exhibition offered our students an inspiring encounter with contemporary design rooted in craft, material knowledge and cultural inheritance.
For students from India, UAE, UK and Bangladesh, it was particularly meaningful to see designers and rich craftsmanship from our region represented within an international design context.
A reminder that craft is not only something we inherit — it is something we continue to reinterpret, evolve and carry forward.

What lies between an idea and the object it becomes?

As part of the Cindrebay Design Safari — London, our participants visited the ISOLA exhibition @isola.design at House of Icon, Shoreditch @shoreditchdesignweek , exploring the theme “In Between Making and Meaning.”
Our sincere thanks to Rodney Aquino, Chief Marketing Officer, ISOLA Design, for welcoming our students and making this encounter possible.
The exhibition offered a thoughtful perspective on the process behind design—the experimentation, material exploration, craft, decisions and journeys that lead from an initial idea to a finished piece.
Encountering collectables and contemporary craftsmanship created by an international community of designers, students experienced a diverse range of approaches to making, materiality and meaning.
For students from universities across India, UAE, UK and Bangladesh, it was an opportunity to engage with an international design platform and experience creativity beyond familiar contexts.

Learning to see is fundamental to learning to design.
As part of the Cindrebay Design Safari — London, students visited the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum to encounter an extraordinary range of craft, objects, textiles, furniture, materials and cultural histories.
For a designer, these collections are more than references. They offer ways of understanding how culture, material, technology and context shape what we make. The museums themselves became subjects of study — exploring curation, exhibition design, spatial sequencing, display, lighting and visitor experience.
Such encounters expand a designer’s visual and intellectual vocabulary, encouraging students to look beyond the object and understand the contexts that give it meaning.
Travel becomes meaningful when looking becomes critical.

Spatial Intervention Workshop at University of Westminster, UK

One of the highlights of our London Design Safari — learning, designing and exchanging perspectives across borders.
Students from Cindrebay Design Safari — India, Bangladesh and UAE came together with M.Arch students from the University of Westminster, UK for an intensive spatial intervention workshop. An international academic exchange where the city became a shared classroom.
Working across different cultures, academic environments and ways of seeing, students explored how context can inform meaningful spatial interventions. The real value was in the exchange—new perspectives, shared methods and learning across cultures.
Led by Prof. Dr. David Mathewson, Prof. Dr. Giulio Verdini and Prof. Abubokkar Siddiki, with academic mentorship from Architect Kaustav Kalyan Deb Burman, Cindrebay, the workshop explored how a place can be understood through its spatial, historical and contemporary contexts—through conversations, photographs, sketches and design proposals.

Some installations stay with you long after you leave them.

Our visit to The Pangolin Shield at Strand Aldwych, part of London Design Festival 2026 @l_d_f_official , was one such encounter.
Designed by Studio Saar @studiosaar.design and Atelier One @atelier.one , the installation immediately drew us in through its materiality — bamboo, traditional Indian police shields and woven knups rain shields coming together as one protective canopy.
But looking closer, there was much more to understand.
We began to see how craft, context and meaning can change when objects are reinterpreted and brought into a new relationship. Objects associated with authority and confrontation were transformed into a space for shelter, rest and dialogue.
For our students, the installation became an opportunity to think about design beyond form — about ecology, colonial histories, cultural context, material innovation and the possibilities within traditional craft.
It also raised a simple but important question:
What happens when we change the context of something we already know?
Perhaps that is one of the most valuable things about experiencing design in the real world — it gives us the opportunity to pause, look again, and question what we thought we understood.
