“What Is the Cultural Afterlife of the Quantum Revolution?”

An excerpt from our conversation with Sabrina Maniscalco at Blueprints, CinemaO’s creative deeptech forum. Co-produced with Locarno Factory at the 2026 Locarno Film Festival.

Sabrina Maniscalco is a quantum physicist and entrepreneur. She is CEO and co-founder of Algorithmiq, a company developing quantum algorithms and software with a focus on life sciences.

Quantum theory may not be immediately intuitive, but it has the power to entirely subvert our deterministic view of the universe.

This is likely why recent advances in quantum research have sparked so much enthusiasm among custodians and researchers of wisdom traditions that came before Western scientific thought. Concepts like indeterminacy, entanglement, and non-linearity have long dwelled in cosmologies that predate — and will outlast — the thinking prevalent in our societies. Yet, we still tend to dismiss them as exotic or esoteric.

If we break the system from within, what falls apart exactly? Whilst investors, politicians, and qubit evangelists hope to be the first to reach a state of “advantage,” those who are less in a rush to freeze an orbiting electron do wonder what will happen when computers can flawlessly simulate nature, when the encryption that protects the internet can be broken, and when all the possibilities of a choice are considered at the same time, just a fraction of a second before a decision is made.

If we fully understand the complexity of what surrounds us, will we still be capable of imagining anything?

“What Foundations Are We Building for Future Authors?”

An excerpt from our conversation with Philippe Rixhon at Blueprints, CinemaO’s creative deeptech forum. Co-produced with Locarno Factory at the 2026 Locarno Film Festival.

Philippe works on digital rights and the infrastructure behind creative work, exploring how data, metadata and standards can better support authorship, attribution and remuneration in an increasingly complex digital landscape.

The systems that track intellectual property rights, from attribution to remuneration, were built for a simpler world of single authors and single works. Today, IP is an ecosystem that lives both inside and outside the digital world, where often tens if not hundreds of authors could benefit from a single work. A maze of provenance knots that cannot easily be untangled.

Philippe’s “engineering utopia” is the perfect reconciliation of access, attribution and remuneration. He argues that this is, first, a data problem rather than a legal one.

Beneath copyright law sits a quieter layer, where identity, attribution, and permission are either made legible to machines or compromised. A new infrastructure is needed, connecting the systems that underpin this framework, so that artists can generate sustainable and fair value from their work.

Since language-based models entered the digital world, the competition for our attention has subtly but decisively shifted. It has turned into an effort to build attachment with our devices and the chatbots we interact with daily.

AI ethicist and data activist Renée Cummings explored this shift with us. She discussed the impact artificial companions have on our agency and creativity. At the core of this issue is data and the algorithms that use it to shape our decisions and, ultimately, our imagination.

Renée’s ongoing research on “data trauma” raises an important question: as AI companionship and assistance become more common, how can we regain agency and control over our data?

Six mornings at the Castello Visconteo in Locarno, six conversations about what is already changing in the way we imagine, produce and tell stories.

With Blueprints, we opened up a space between cinema, technology, science and culture to question the forces that are reshaping creative work, from authorship and memory to infrastructure, ownership and imagination itself.

What happens when our creative tools are alive? Who decides which stories survive? What kind of infrastructure are we building for future authors? And, as technology becomes increasingly entangled with the way we think and create, what will we still be capable of imagining?

Blueprints started from these questions.

𝐁𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞
Curated by Vincenzo Estremo & Annalisa Pellino
3 September 2026 · 20.30
CinemaO — Via Luigi Cirenei 6A, Milan

Babette, the suspended presence at the heart of Don DeLillo’s White Noise (1985), hovers between consciousness and premonition: vital and reassuring, yet profoundly vulnerable. She moves through the media’s white noise, haunted by the possibility that it may suddenly turn into an alarm—or signal an imminent catastrophe.

The protagonists of the films we propose—women performing folk tales, children gradually losing their words, and an elderly blind woman—occupy a similarly unstable space between absence and presence, vulnerability and vitality. As resonant bodies, they invite a vibrant, haptic mode of listening, turning disappearance, blindness, and the loss of language into generative sites of invention. Through vocal gestures and movement, they forge forms of communication that are at once fragile and powerful.

∙ ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙

✶ Emilija Škarnulytė, Aldona, 2013 (13’)
In the spring of 1986, Aldona lost her vision and became permanently blind. The nerves in her eyes were poisoned. Doctors claimed that it was probably due to Chernobyl’s Nuclear Power Plant explosion. In the film we follow Aldona through a daily sojourn to Grutas Park, touching both the past and the present.

✶ Noor Abed, our songs were ready for all wars to come, 2021 (22’)
The haunting sound of a woman’s voice. A song sung by Palestinian singer Maya Khaldi with lyrics of different Palestinian folk tales. Women performing draw connections between latent stories of water wells and communal rituals associated with disappearance, mourning and death.

✶ Adele Dipasquale, Lose Voice Toolkit, 2024 (18’30’’)
In a suspended, undefinable place and time we see a group of children who don’t use words anymore. They might have lost them due to powerful voice-stealing magnets, or dissolved by voice-vanishing candies. So, they start to transform and develop a new system of communication made of aerial forms, sharp gazes, and shared thoughts.
