Practical Magic (1998)

Brilliantly directed by Griffin Dunne, and adapted from the 1995 novel by Alice Hoffman.

The movie stars the ever-so-iconic array of talent: Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Dianne Wiest, Stockard Channing, Evan Rachel Wood, Margo Martindale, and Aidan Quinn, to name but a few.

Bullock and Kidman amazingly portray sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, who come from a long line of witches and live with their super quirky witch aunts in the most incredible and beautiful house by the sea (which I’ve always dreamt about living in).

After their parents die from a family curse, the sisters learn the ways of practical magic as they grow up.

I vividly remember watching Practical Magic at the cinema in October 1998. It was released a few days after my birthday and let’s be honest, October is my favourite month. The film instantly became a favourite. I adored every aspect – the script, the acting, the soundtrack, particularly Stevie Nicks’ “Crystal” which has been on repeat ever since. The set design and beautiful autumnal and spring backdrops added to the magic.

The charming small-town atmosphere was perfect. It was a moody coastal New England town brimming with rustic charm, falling leaves and harvest moons.

The aesthetics were iconic. The sprawling Victorian gothic house, candlelit kitchens, apothecary jars and cosy 90s knitwear created a warm and inviting feel.

“Practical Magic” is a perfect blend of small-town comfort, sisterhood, romance and light magic. It’s a seasonal staple for fall and Halloween viewing.

I recently rewatched it on the big screen and it felt like I’d seen it for the first time back in Poland in 1998.

I’m eagerly anticipating the sequel, which is out in September!

THE DRAMA (2026)

I thoroughly enjoyed the film written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli.

The film stars a talented ensemble cast including Zendaya and Robert Pattinson as a happily engaged couple whose relationship is tested by an unexpected revelation during the week before their wedding.

The supporting cast, including Alana Haim and Mamoudou Athie, is absolutely amazing. The acting, cinematography, editing and thought-provoking script were all fantastic.

‘My Father’s Shadow’ a 2025 drama film impeccably directed by Akinola Davies Jr., marks his feature-length film debut. He co-wrote the screenplay ever so brilliantly with his brother Wale Davies.

During the 1993 Nigerian election crisis, two young brothers embark on a journey through Lagos with their estranged father. They witness the city’s immense scale and their father’s daily struggles as political unrest threatens their return home.

Sope Dirisu and the entire cast delivered a wonderfully acted performance in My Father’s Shadow, while Jermaine Canute and Bradley Edwards captured the film’s stunning visuals.

It’s a true masterpiece, a feast for the soul and senses. It moved me, made me smile and even made me sad, taking me on a rollercoaster of emotions.

This is a subtle and beautiful yet deeply poignant exploration of parenthood masculinity and endurance.

I thoroughly enjoyed the costumes designed by PC Williams and the incredible soundtrack by Duval Timothy and CJ Mirra.

Can’t wait to rewatch it. I highly recommend it.

‘WILD THINGS’ (1998) directed by John McNaughton

A twisted, brilliantly convoluted, now infamously classic thriller. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, you really haven’t! Trying to work out who’s more devious is half the fun of this erotic, nudity-filled thrill-fest, guaranteed to electrify the atmosphere between watching couples on V Day. A star-studded cast including Kevin (yes, the Bacon) Bacon, Bill Murray, Denise Richards, and one of my fave ‘90s actresses, Neve Campbell, keep viewers in suspense. Apparently, some people feel the need to pause at various moments… can’t think why! (Ha!)

‘FRIDAY THE 13TH VII : THE NEW BLOOD’ (1988) directed by John Carl Buechler.

Obviously not all couples like a sickly-sweet schmaltz-fest on Valentine’s Day. There’s nothing like a good blood-spattered horror to make the object of one’s desire edge that little bit closer… After all, scary-time equals racing pulses… and we all know what racing pulses mean, don’t we!! So, here we are joining maniacal, hockey-mask-wearing, homicide aficionado Jason Voorhees as he slashes his way through ‘80s fashion-wearing youngsters who are foolish enough to engage in rumpy-pumpy!… Which he absolutely HATES!! A funny, ridiculous thrilling joy-ride of a film that is soooo bad, that it’s actually bloody FANTASTIC!

‘EMMA’ (2020) directed by Autumn de Wilde.

The mischievous Emma delightfully pokes her little nosey into the romantic affairs of her friends. A masterful performance by Anya Taylor-Joy and a sometimes overlooked but equally brilliant execution by the legend that is Bill Nighy and of course Miranda Hart, make this Jane Austin adaptation a light-hearted, feel-good affair for Valentine’s couples… (yep I know, hold the vom!!) The styling is excellent, and brilliant cinematography from Christopher Blauvelt (NO… not James Bond’s nemesis, that’s spelt ‘Blofeld’) makes for an excellent feel for this movie.

‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’ (1982)

One of my favourite movies ever. It’s so feel-good and comforting. I always rewatch it, this time of the year 🍁

This incredibly made, iconic science fiction flick sublimely produced and directed by of the greatest movie directors of all time, Steven Spielberg and ever so wonderfully written by Melissa Mathison.

The storyline focuses on Elliott (Peter Coyote, brilliant) a boy who befriends an extraterrestrial that he names E.T. who has been stranded on Earth, in the suburbs of the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, California, to be particular.

Along with his friends and family, Elliott must find a way to help E.T. find his way home. The film stars Dee Wallace, Henry Thomas, Robert MacNaughton, and Drew Barrymore - in her debut role.

It used to be my favourite movie to watch when I was a kid. I’d go to rent it from the local video store all the time.

The movie is shot so beautifully. Steven Spielberg has manage to create that unique small town vibe which I love.

With its fantastic score by John Williams and out of this world practical effects E.T stands out and is very special, iconic and timeless.

THE CRAFT (1996)

“Welcome to The Witching Hour!”

Directed by Andrew Fleming, The Craft was released 28 years ago.

It is hands down one of my favourite 90’s classics!

I’ve seen it at least 40 times and watched the original screening of it at the cinema when I was only 10 years old!

It’s starring my fave ‘90s actor, Neve Campbell, as well as Robin Tunney, Rachel True and absolutely brilliant, Faruiza Balk who is magnificent portraying Nancy, the head witch.

The plot follows 17-year-old girl, Sarah with a troubled past, who has just moved to L.A where she starts a new high school and falls in with ‘a brigade of black lipsticks and nails’ – three outcast teenage girls who have been dabbling in the world of witchcraft and occult.

What I love about the film is the storyline which perfectly blends the high school vibes with the witchcraft and that is something I haven’t really seen on the big screen before. I loved the cool soundtrack which contains a collection of rock songs that perfectly suit the dark theme of the movie.

Another thing I adore about The Craft is the fashion – really dark, gothic, avant-garde outfits accessorised with cool jewellery and heavy smoky-eye makeup.

I love all the scenes where ‘The Fab Four Coven’ bond together while casting spells and standing up for each other.

In the years since its release the film has gained a cult following and I’m proudly one of the cult members! An interesting fact about the movie is that both Angelina Jolieand Alicia Silverstone screen-tested for the main roles but didn’t get them. Oops!

Recently, I’ve watched the brand new, highly anticipated Frédéric Chopin biopic titled ‘Chopin, a Sonata in Paris’ at the cinema, in my native Poland and it was absolutely remarkable.

Paris, 1835. Renowned composer Frédéric Chopin ( absolutely incredible @erickulmjr ) navigates high society, performing concerts, teaching for income while sadly battling a serious illness. He composes masterpieces, attends lavish parties while trying to find his happiness and a pursuit of love and romance amid aristocratic and royal circles.

The film was greatly written by Bartosz Janiszewski and ever so beautifully directed by the super talented Michał Kwieciński - who has also made another visual masterpiece, a movie called “Filip” (2023) which I absolutely adored.

The soundtrack, production, set design, costumes and especially the cinematography by Michał Sobociński were a total jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring feast for all the senses.

The best thing however, was the top-notch cast with fabulous names featured in the movie, such as Victor Meutelet, Joséphine de La Baume, Lambert Wilson, Karolina Gruszka and Maja Ostaszewska to name but a few, led by the multitalented and marvellous, aforementioned @erickulmjr ! WOOOW! THE OUTSTANDING, OSCAR WORTHY PERFORMANCE!

What a brilliant, powerful, sad, poignant yet so frivolous and light-hearted portrayal of the iconic - Chopin. Absolutely loved it!

I highly recommend it! 100%

‘Cruella’ (2021)

Disney’s live action, crime comedy film stupendously directed by Craig Gillespie from an absolutely brilliant screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara.

The movie is serving as a very interesting backstory and an alternative origin story for its antagonist, Cruella de Vil.

It is also the third live-action adaptation in the ‘101 Dalmatians’ franchise. The film stars Emma Stone as the title character, with Emma Thompson, Joel Fry (brilliant performance) Paul Walter Hauser (super funny) Emily Beecham, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Mark Strong all fab in supporting roles.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! YES!! 💯

Both, Emma Thompson & Emma Stone are shinning on silver screen! What an amazing, top-notch, strong performances. A masterclass in acting! 🎭

Loved the story line, the fashion and its soundtrack as well as the set design the uber cool 70’s London backdrop.

It’s deffo one of my very favourite Disney live action movies. It’s fresh, well written, greatly made and gorgeously directed.

10/10 from me & can’t wait for the sequel 😍 by @cinematey
