Tèleios D16+ ✅ First Ascent
.
It's going to take me more than a couple of days to fully digest this process that has taken over my life for the last five months. Tèleios was born from the realization that what I did for Aletheia two years ago, which felt like a massive effort to send a route, was actually far from what I really could have done, from doing everything possible.
.
So, I decided to dedicate an entire season to do just that - setting aside everything else in my life - to see how far I could push my performance if I made this a full-time job, training like an Olympian, optimizing every aspect of it. From nutrition to betas. From endurance to sleep. From social life to mindfulness. I could write a book about all the perspectives I've studied and the variables I've tested, and how this journey has transformed me.
.
But in the end, the true testament to this endeavor lies in that cave: a route harder than I ever thought possible, yet it came easier than I will ever be able to accept. This is my gift to the obscure discipline of dry tooling. My fortunate opportunity in life to explore something new, to pioneer. Which is all so exciting and intoxicating. It is the main reason that drives me and a privilege for which I am immensely thankful.

L'INSOSTENIBILE LEGGEREZZA DELL'ESSERE

The Unbearable Lightness of Being
"Our dreams prove that to imagine - to dream about things that have not happened - is among mankind's deepest needs."
Milan Kundera

I looked at that wall in awe many many times. I dreamt of her white lines. I waited for her to be ready for me.
And yesterday everything fell into place.
A bright thread dropped from her head and me, Rosty and Florian followed it to the end. An unexpected sweet day, one of those days that make the struggle worthwhile.

Ho osservato quella parete con soggezione tante, troppe volte. Ho sognato le sue bianche linee. Ho aspettato che fosse pronta per me.
E ieri ogni cosa è andata come doveva andare. Un capello luminoso è caduto dalla sua chioma ed io, Rosty e Florian l'abbiamo seguito fino alla fine.

When someone asked me about Mount Civetta, I used to answer "Don't know, never been there. My first time on top it's going to be through the NW face, through the Solleder". Because that was THE Dream.
There were other ones - some already fulfilled in these last couple years - some still waiting - but that was the bigger one. Well before I started climbing.
And so last week I found my self shivering for the first time at the base of this massive, scary, legendary wall. My mind full of thoughts. What could go wrong? What if I don't have it in me?
"La Parete delle Pareti" (The Wall of all walls) was conquered in 1925, an epic quest by Emil Solleder and Gustav Lettenbauer who found a way through the monstrous labyrinth. One of the most iconic achievements in the history of climbing, the dawn of the sixth grade in the alps. And it was the biggest honor of my life to walk in their footsteps and reach that summit I've only admired with awe from the valley.
And up there it all settled.
The fear and the pride vanished at once, replaced by joy and - above all - nostalgia. Every dream, when it's fulfilled, leaves some kind of void. So I immediately realized this thing I was experiencing was actually loss. That wall, that route, would never have the same intensity for me. Probably no other wall would. I'm so glad I got to live it like this and even if in the end felt maybe easy, what weren't easy were all the years it took me to get there. But I guess it's how life works, if you want to progress.
I'll always remember that sunset on the summit like a moment of profound growth.
Now it's time to think bigger and find another major dream. Well, telling the truth, I already have another big one on that wall. But I'm not gonna tell yet...

What a weird summer. Felt like I skipped it, but looking back, I managed to squeeze so much into the little time I had!
Only a handful of days in the mountains, but I made each one count, even sneaking in a few routes that had been on my list forever:
Philipp Flamm - NW Civetta
Carlesso - Torre Trieste
Gente di Mare - Lastoi de Formin
Spigolo Strobel Fast Lap
Not bad for a guy who doesn't climb anymore 😉

Don't ask me why, but I've always wanted to climb the legendary Philipp Flamm on mount Civetta — and at the same time, it kind of scared me.
I was convinced it wasn't a route to take lightly, that it demanded effort and reverence. It built up in my mind as this treacherous undertaking, and maybe that's why I kept postponing it. The right moment never seemed to come.
Then a few days ago I just went and climbed it. Decided the day before, set an early alarm, went.
Single rope, from the car instead of the hut, no backup plan. Certain it was well within my reach: a long day out, nothing more.
And that it was.
So many things are like this. They sit in your head and build reverence — and often that reverence couldn't be more wrong.
Until a few years ago I was climbing or running every day, as fit as it gets, convinced that fitness was your margin for days like this. Now I climb once a week, often not even that. And that's the whole week's physical activity.
The effort and motivation I once poured into training went somewhere else — into writing, which keeps me at a laptop most of my spare time.
So on paper, I know I shouldn't be doing outings like this. And yet, the mind is a marvelous thing.
Lately I keep thinking about how much easier it makes everything. Fitness becomes superfluous. It makes you move faster, with less effort. It optimizes every draining aspect, from movement to logistics. And when that's not enough, it lets you ignore fatigue and pain so you can push through — a debt I usually pay the following day. Or days.
The mind is also how you think clearly, dismiss groundless fears, make quick decisions.
Eventually, it learns not to doubt itself. Which is the biggest one of all.
So I'm left with this doubt: was I wrong to rely on training that much all those years? Or was I just a different kind of right?
Who knows.

Today marks exactly 10 years since I started climbing.

Ten years of searching that taught me lessons I wouldn't have learned any other way. I wasn't looking for it, but the moment I tried it, it swallowed me whole. Every free minute went into it, everything else bending around it. The collecting - addicting - nature of it, the relationship with grades, with my body, the friends, the places...
Such a fun, relentless period of my life that went on for a good half of this decade. I fast-tracked to goals I never thought were possible for me.
But I'd be lying if I said there wasn't also a component of avoidance. Now that I can see it clearly, I think a lot of people get caught in that whirlpool. No judgment, it just wasn't enough for me. It wasn't why I started.
Fortunately, in the second half of these ten years, I learned to weave this new world into my life more organically. To kill some of its demons. To stop making it the foundation of everything. To stop hiding behind the identity it gave me, and basically to just slow down.
Looking back, I'm glad I managed to - and I couldn't be prouder of the choices I made.

Alpinism completely changed my relationship with fear and, with it, my anxiety. It changed my values, my relationship with my body, and so the way I measure myself.
All this pseudophilosophical rambling just to say: what a journey it has been!
I feel incredibly lucky to have stumbled into climbing, even though it was always there in a corner of my life. And I genuinely recommend this path to anyone who feels the need to grow and feel the same.

As a kid, I was always reading about adventures. Looking back on these ten years, this is exactly the kind I was dreaming of.

I haven't thought about skiing this season, haven't felt the pull.
Then the mountains filled in, one day I went out and it was enough. I'm back in the game!

When the snow is great and safe, few things compare. Mornings like this have a special place in my heart. But please don't go out trying to force these moments! They're awesome precisely because they're rare—I'll gladly take just a couple each season over skiing my last.
The climate's been fucked up lately. Messing around means eventually finding out. It's in the numbers.
That's why I stick to my backyard. I know this terrain—its history, its traps. I rarely venture elsewhere anymore, and honestly? It's enough.
Stick to your backyard - at least when the snow's sketchy - and the climate will thank you too.

Looks like I had a pretty intense week. A rare cold spell rolled in — and when that happens, you hit pause on everything else and climb as much ice as you can!
