The first college drop off has been the most roller-y of emotional rollercoasters.

For me:)

Just when I thought I couldn’t love this boy any more, he goes and grows into an even wiser, cooler, funnier, smarter 100% ready-for-college version of himself.

I’m a puddle.

A happy, proud puddle, but still, a puddle.

There are a thousand ways and a thousand poets who could tell the story of the first 40 years of Marc Smith and the Green Mill Poetry Slam.

Each story would be phenomenal.

How grateful am I to have been a part of this one at the Newberry Library with Carlos, Julia, the Chicago poetry ensemble, Billy, Lisa, Mark, Mayda, Gregorio, and my partner in voice, Sheila.

So much joy!

Thank you to Emily Calvo, Jean Howard and so many others who put their hearts and soul into celebrating Chicago poetry and the collection that is now a permanent part of the Newberry Liberary.

“Betty’s Mouth” was born when @sheila_poet and I discovered we could finish each other’s sentences and start each other’s poems with ease.

We spent the 90’s performing on stages in Chicago, LA, and really anywhere anyone asked us, and we imagine ourselves in our 90’s, still able to jump inside each other’s mouths and become one poem out loud.

This Saturday, we are part of an afternoon of amazing poets performing at the Newberry Library to celebrate 40 years of the Poetry Slam.

✨ Yesterday I brought my soul to work — and left completely full. 🙌🏾
The ALTAR Open House in partnership with @womenbelong was everything. A full day of learning, connecting, and growing with an incredible community of women. Here’s a peek at what made it so special 👇
☕ 9AM — Coffee, Conversation & Coworking
The perfect soft landing to start the day — emails, intentions, and good energy all in one room.
🔵 10AM — Welcome & Opening Circle
Setting the tone together.
💛 10:30AM — “The Right to Belong” with @dwrosen
A mindset shift I didn’t know I needed — moving from “How do I fit in?” to “I have every right to be here.” Period.
📸 11:45AM — “The Moment Before the Camera” with @spidermeka of SpiderMeka Portraits
This session hit different. The confidence she poured into us before stepping in front of a lens? Unmatched. And she said something I’ll never forget — if a cake doesn’t taste good, you blame the baker. So why is it that when a photo doesn’t turn out right, we blame ourselves for not being pretty enough instead of the photographer? 🎂 We are not the problem, sis. Never were. 😆
🥗 12:30PM — Community Lunch with @foodbyfare
Nourishing food + nourishing conversation. Yes to all of it.
🤝 2PM — “The Practice of Generous Networking” with @kate_alpert
Networking without the ick. This workshop rewired how I think about showing up for others.
✍🏾 3:30PM — “Write Yourself Whole” with @cinsalach
We wrote. We felt. We remembered who we are. And can I just say — I was AMAZED by the talent in that room! 😭 The poets that showed up and showed OUT had me speechless. Women walking around with all of this gift just living their regular lives?! Chicago is STACKED. 🎤✨ A beautiful close to a beautiful day.

In this workshop, I’m not going to teach you how to write (there are plenty of humans out there to do that.)

I’m going to teach you WHY to write.

And by teach, I mean welcome you into a space safe enough, sacred enough, and held enough for you to hear the miracle of your own voice.

Each Saturday morning we share an opening ritual, write, listen, write more, witness, let ourselves be witnessed. Share a closing ritual. Split the world open.

Then we come back the next week and do it again.

Regularly $250, I’m offering this session for only what you can afford. Suggested donation is $100, but no woman will be turned away because of money until the circle is complete.
