parade (book review) is a weird little story that hands you the glasses of the voyeur and asks you not to judge 🐚 it follows distinct characters that against all odds tended to blend into each other, each introduction casually scattering blades of insight on a petal littered floor. i often bring cusk on holiday with me—time away from home offers me a moment to reflect on the people around me, and cusk knows people down to skin and sweat. lyrical, biting, obsessive yet simple, this one took me a second to melt into but once i did i was back in her sun-drenched memories and i never want to leave

hello friends, it’s been a long time since i journaled for you! let’s catch up in this tiny little word count as i make my re-entry into the book world. i moved to east london mid-august! my first big steps out of my family home. i’ve left before, packing my bags for university in the north and salty australian sun, but i always knew i was coming back. now, the future is foggy

i’ve had a bit of a rollercoaster of a time, and while my liver is screaming and my pockets are empty, my heart is full (if not bruised, by a man or two). it’s a miracle to have london on my doorstep, sunning on rooftop cafes, swanky galleries, sunrise flower markets, red-lit bars, or digging in musty thrifts. but i finally feel settled enough to reignite my passions, and that’s here, with you!! my goal into october is to stop taking pictures of books, and start reading them again. psst, should i start a book club?

the theme is: strangeness 🫖 although all different, i was drawn to these books for the same reason: they circle misunderstanding, flirt with solipsism. people often call winter reflective, but i dream more in the sun. i’m harsher on myself, and on other people. i don’t know why. summer feels like a strange season to me. our skin leathers and swells in the heat, yet we’re expected to exhibit it. we’re pulled outdoors, even though it’s the same outdoors as november’s. steal my tbr for soft introspection in the season of summer 💌 or philosophy without reading anything too dreadfully academic (a series inked in my skin)

short summer reads that make you feel hot, sticky and full of olive-stuffed martinis🍸 a breath of fresh air from the 520 page Italian-crusted romance recs that flood feeds in the summer months (though if that’s your style, I love that for you & hope you’re thriving) these are under 200 pages, not so sweet, but unsettlingly addictive. enjoy! 🪭

what i’m wearing & what i’m reading 🪭

clarice lispector and i have wisping connections to ukraine, both becoming women elsewhere. both further to the sublime, strange & lustfully disturbing. i find comfort in the winding lack of plot and in the dancing prose. i’m looking forward to engulfing this book (i hope i like it)

filling out this trend was sort of bittersweet, trying to condense my love and yearning for many into one 🪭 i feel as a dandelion seed in the gusting wind (with risk of sounding like katy perry & her plastic bag) and i can’t quite find a place to land at the moment. many lives and versions of myself crammed into one. anyways, enjoy the trend, find some new reads & make your own version please

haul 🦢 after a month long book buying ban (which really should last for centuries, since i continue to buy books i never read) and the books i nearly bought instead

whittling my long list down, these both sounded up my alley: short, a little bit strange & that slice of intrigue translated fiction offers into another life. both international booker prize nominees!? coincidentally (p.s. i’ve now already read ‘on earth as it is beneath’ and it was fabulous) — have you read any of these?

the books i read on holiday & their ratings 🪸 the sea laps, herons crane their neck for swirling schools of fish, and pages turn as if by design. reading away from everyday responsibilities is a simple pleasure. the ability to relax and take in art, and culture, is one we don’t often stop to take in gratitude for. i’m grateful
