Art is for everyone. It doesn’t have to be fancy. It doesn’t have to be perfect. 👌

Making art is about expression. About stepping out of time to connect with something unexplainable. For me, it’s a way to process without words.

I’ve been tracking my menstrual cycle through my journals for the last decade and they look something like this. Shoutout to @anamariazabala and @_aya_ora_ for showing me the way 🌈

Every time I create a new monthly calendar, I use the same basic structure, elements, and language that’s personal to me to track changes. But the designs that grow around it are always different. I simply take time for myself to create. There’s no need for it to ‘become’ anything.

I’m happy to finally share a special commission made last year for @maternidadlaluz_birthcenter ✨ It was made to hold the path of every soul making its way to earth.

A (placenta) tree or roots support the growth of footprints - impressions on heart shaped leaves - marking the birth of each baby born at the clinic. In this way, ‘Linaje’ is a collaborative journey involving each family, their support team of midwives and students, and the passage of time. It’s special to see how the tree grows 🩵

A mother sits at a spring, safe-keeping a well of memories. Roots tap into her ancestral lineage. She meditates and connects with her higher self and baby. She sits within a powerful energy that comes from beyond her. There is peace, calm, quiet, and stillness. Her presence is reassuring. I hope the pregnant mothers that look into her eyes are reminded to trust in themselves 🧘🏽‍♀️

Feliz de poder compartirles una comisión que hice el año pasado para @maternidadlaluz_birthcenter ✨ La intención era crear una obra que sostuviera el camino de cada alma que entrara al mundo.

Un árbol de placenta sostiene las huellitas - pequeñas impresiones en hojas con forma de corazón - que marcan la llegada de cada bebé en la clínica. ‘Linaje’ es una pieza colaborativa que involucra cada familia con su equipo de parteras y estudiantes. Traza el paso del tiempo. Que especial es ver cómo crece este árbol 💙

Una madre medita en su manantial. Es guardiana del pozo de los recuerdos enraizados en su linaje ancestral. Conecta con una parte de si elevada en el más allá y también con la bebé que gesta por dentro. Una energía celestial las cubre con paz, calma, tranquilidad y quietud. Espero que cada madre que la mire a los ojos se llene de confianza 🧘🏽‍♀️

Maria’s story 🌬️

🌌 Maria gave birth during kaamos, known as the polar night, when the sun does not rise over the arctic horizon line in Northern Finland 🌌

Though originally from Kotka, she moved up north many years ago, where she met her partner Jere, a Sámi man from Ivalo.

Ivalo is part of Sápmi, the ancestral Sámi lands ❄️

Maria’s story sheds light on what it is to give birth in Northern Finland, where hundreds of kilometers must be traversed to get to a hospital. Her story involves days of waiting in the hospital after her waters broke, an induction, a half functioning epidural, and an intrauterine infection.

And yet, she also recalls moments of support and celebration through her experience 🪽

🌌 Above all, the blanket of darkness watches over her story like a quiet guardian. Kaamos is “something really special,” Maria reveals. 🌌

Josefiina joins voices with her partner Ville to tell this experience. This is their strength - togetherness!

After a challenging pregnancy filled with nausea and an induction to birth during Midsummer, one of the biggest Finnish holidays, the labor was difficult. The hospital was understaffed and very busy.

Josefiina and Ville felt alone and without support. When a strange, sharp, and unusual pain came up in labor that was not the contractions, they felt scared - even unsafe.

“I was panic[king],” said Josefiina.

With these words, and perhaps unknowingly, she opened up a space to talk about panic in labor.

What causes panic? What happens in the body? What can we do calm the nervous system?

How can we recognize and support women through the feeling of panic in medical establishments?

Did you feel panic during birth?

And can panic be a message, a stepping-stone, a teacher?

An inner mothering instinct kicked in at the end of her labor that brought Josefiina back into her Power, and then she brought her birth back to herself.

Marjatta's Story 🌸

Translated from Finnish to English by her youngest daughter, Katja!

Marjatta, almost 80 at the time of the interview, was born right after WWII when Finland was building itself back up.

This is a story filled with remembrance: of studying as a young woman, of giving birth to four children, of raising them all. Of a marriage of 60 years with her husband. Of ageing and change. Of the death of her firstborn, who she bravely gives space to with her words.

It's a story of wisdom.

Marjatta concludes, "In life...[and] in marriage, there's good, and there's bad times...you just have to learn to live with that...talk things through to get it going again."

"Mother" is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Tiina 🌾

I lived with her during the summer of 2023 in Kotka, Finland, so this story is one that is close to my heart!

Tiina has supported and mothered children from a young age both in her personal life and in her work as a development manager at the Federation of Mother and Child Homes and Shelter, which helps families all over Finland in times of need and situations of domestic violence.

In her recording, we talk about some of the big moments in motherhood for her and the changes it has brought to her life at different times. There is one thing that remains at her core throughout it all.

"I will be always mother," Tiina shares in her story, "they will always be my children."

It's been 2 years since we recorded it together, and it's been so sweet to return to it and share it with you today!

🇫🇮 This is the first of the stories from Finland, and it's a unique one because homebirth in this country occurs in less than 1% of the births 🇫🇮

Stepping outside of the birth culture around her and into the birth that she hoped for, Erika shared that the hard parts of giving birth are what empowered her the most.

"[Birth] doesn't have to be easy," she reflects, "good birth isn't easy birth."

🩷 Feliz de finalmente poderles compartir la historia de Rosa @rosapartera.delatierra y su hermana Antonia 🩷

Ellas son dos hermanas que juntas decidieron adoptar a su hija María Flor 🏵 Su formato familiar es poco usual y desafía las normas de su comunidad maya y católica, pero juntas han logrado superar las dificultades que se les han presentado.

Rosa es partera en Chacama, en Chiapas, México. Nos habla de los retos que viven las mujeres en su comunidad. Sus palabras están llenas de resiliencia. Poco a poco las cosas van cambiando con historias como la de ella.

💙 More than a year after returning home to Costa Rica after my travels, I decided it was time to share Birth Story with my little community of Montezuma. Cried my way through it, but that's okay because I needed to share this with the people I love! Thank you to every one of you who came to bear witness to this process and to listen to the stories of all these women.

Más de un año pasó de haber vuelto a Costa Rica antes de poder compartir este proyecto con mi pueblito de Montezuma. Se me salieron las lagrimas con cada historia pero lo importante fue compartirlas con las personas que quiero! Gracias a todos los que llegaron a precenciar este proceso y escuchar las historias de todas las mujeres que contribuyeron sus palabras. 💙
