MIS-C Awareness Week - Day 6 - “Our Stories”

MIS-C is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that affects children, often weeks after a COVID-19 infection- even when the initial illness was mild or unnoticed.

Advocacy is critical. Sharing real life stories is crucial.

Children with MIS-C often experience delayed diagnosis due to lack of awareness. Families report symptoms being dismissed, care being delayed, and critical time lost. Early recognition and rapid treatment can save lives and reduce long-term complications.

Advocacy means:
• Educating families, schools, and communities about MIS-C symptoms
• Listening to parents and caregivers when they say something is wrong
• Supporting research, funding, and long-term follow-up care
• Ensuring equitable access to timely pediatric care
• Holding systems accountable to protect children’s health

Awareness alone is not enough.
Action is required - from healthcare systems, policymakers, educators, and communities.

Important Update - June 2024⚠️

“The results of this study suggest that children and adolescents with acute SARS-CoV-2 or MIS-C and severe neurological manifestations may be at high risk for long-term impairment and may benefit from screening and early intervention to assist recovery.”

“Future studies should aim to better understand the pathophysiology behind the severe neurological manifestations and to investigate the role of surveillance, treatment, and follow-up of these patients with high risk of neurocognitive and/or functional morbidities.”
