The @sacramentobee op-ed by Dr. Julia Moore Vogel and Dr. Alison Cohen highlights detrimental issues regarding California Department of Public Health shortened CDC-recommended COVlD isolation period from 5 days to 24 hrs. for infected Californians with no symptoms, mild symptoms, or improving symptoms.

⚠ California’s shortened isolation policy for contagious people will lead to more transmission, more absences, more deaths, and more #LongCOVlD.
⚠Marginalized populations where people already face a disproportionate level of risk will now be expected to navigate even riskier public spaces.

Julia Moore Vogel, PhD, MBA, is a #LongCOVID patient-researcher at @scrippsresearch . Alison Cohen, PhD, MPH, is an assistant professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at ucsf. We are grateful to the two researchers from the Patient-Led Research Collaborative @patientled for raising their concerns about the #LongCovid crisis.

⚠4% of U.S. adults have long COVlD to the point it limits their daily activities
⚠Growing evidence indicates lack of sufficient rest during infection increases the chance of developing long COVlD.
⚠4 million U.S. adults are already out of work due to long COVlD.
⚠Forcing students and employees to contract even more repeat infections is counterproductive to the stated goals of improving attendance.

Instead of letting the virus go rampant, sickening more people and worsening truancy, the writers suggest infection-control practices:
🔹Promote the use of high-quality masks in all public places
🔹 Upgrade air filtration systems
🔹 Make rapid tests freely available
🔹 Make paid sick leave available to those who are sick

Vogel and Cohen remind us that “Public health policies should be rooted in science and data with the goal of protecting our whole community, including the most vulnerable among us.” ❤

😷+🥽+💉+🔄+👃🏻+🧴#MaskTogetherAmerica We are grateful to Dr. Vogel and Dr. Cohen, researchers from Patient-Led Collaborative for raising concerns about the #LongCovid crisis being further threatened by public health dismissing isolation in mitigation. To protect children from C19, the Flu, and other illnesses, the CDC recommends ages 2 years and older to wear masks to school.

“If your child has a disability or chronic health condition, wearing a mask can give extra protection to help them stay healthy.” The #CDC guidelines have been updated April 27, 2023. The #MaskTogetherAmerica community welcomes the change.

We agree with the @cdcgov that “Masks also help to prevent children from spreading C19 to other people around them.” Reducing transmissions helps all children by decreasing time out of school due to illness.

#MaskUp together is the best way to keep #elderly family members and those who are #immunocompromised safe. We hope hospitals will also #KeepMasksInHealthCare to protect staff and patients.

Lastly, we urge the CDC to also update the C19 isolation guideline. We recommend changing the 5-day isolation to test negative 2X to leave isolation. Keep up the good work!

Stay #COVIDSMART:
🛌🏻 Isolate when testing [+]
😷 Wear N95s together
🧴 Disinfect frequently-touched surfaces
🤲 Clean hands regularly
🪟 Open windows

Behind the KF94 is #BrainCancerWarrior Eddie, sleeping peacefully as his parents fight for the safety of him and other @seattlechildrens pediatric patients.

In May 2022, Eddie, 11, was diagnosed with an embryonal brain tumor, originating from his brainstem. His symptoms developed quickly. When the cancer was detected, it had already spread to other parts of his brain and spine. Since then, he has been in and out of hospitals for radiation and chemotherapy.

The pandemic is not over, but Washington state is planning to lift the mask requirements in healthcare facilities on April 3. Becca Peter, mom of two children, worries about COVID complications and #LongCovid.

“My son is immunosuppressed. Chemo last fall temporarily wiped out his immunity. His lymphocytes are still low. His white blood cell count is up and down. He’s also vomiting nearly every day from his current oral chemo. Still, we are lucky that he is responding to his treatment. One of the reasons that his treatment worked is because we avoided getting sick. Any illness would be a setback because that would delay his treatment which could allow the tumor to grow back.”

Becca created a petition to urge Seattle Children’s Hospital to keep the mask requirement permanently for their medically vulnerable patients. http://bit.ly/3SYJ9Og

“I can keep my kids home from school and away from other risky indoor environments. But if I don't take Eddie to the hospital to treat his cancer— he will die.”

Seattle Children's Hospital provides care to children with cancer, children needing organ transplants and children who are #immunocompromised. No one, especially a child, should have to face extra risk just to access medical care. Masking is a simple way to protect our most vulnerable, especially in healthcare settings.

Please sign and share Becca @polevaultpower’s petition to help protect Eddie and kids like him. http://bit.ly/3SYJ9Og

C19 deaths constituted 2% of all causes of death among aged 0-19 years in the U.S., ranking first in deaths caused by infectious and respiratory diseases for kids and teens between August 2021 and July 2022. (Source: @live_science & @cdcgov )

According to an assessment conducted in Germany, recently published in JAMA Network, kids and teens were at similar risks for #LongCovid as adults. (PLOS Medicine @plosjournals ) The findings show that about a third of the kids and adults have health problems 3 months after an infection of C19.

The study was based on medical records of people with positive PCR test in 2020. The C19 group incl. 11,950 children & adolescents (67% of whom were younger than 12) and 145,184 adults aged 18 +.

Most common symptoms for children include fatigue, anxiety, "brain fog, shortness of breath & muscle pain.

Daniel Blatt, MD, a pediatric infectious disease physician at the post-COVID clinic at Norton Children's Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky said for all pediatric LC cases, families need to be heard that what their child is experiencing is real and serious.

Estimated at least 90% of U.S. kids have had C19. (CDC)

These findings help us see that children and young people aren’t excluded from the risk of severe outcomes from C19. Use all the preventive tools recommended by the @who

🔹#ɢᴇᴛᴠᴀᴄᴄɪɴᴀᴛᴇᴅ
🔹Get the booster

🔹Test
🔹Test negative 2X to leave isolation when sick.

First lady Dr. Jill Biden @Flotus, accompanied by President Biden, #MaskUp while reading "The Snowy Day" by Ezra Jack Keats at Children's National Hospital in Washington D.C. (@NYPOST) Thank you @POTUS and the @WHITEHOUSE and New York Post for giving us this heartwarming image to share on #Christmas Day.

Let’s take precautions to protect our precious health. Anyone can have medical conditions that make them vulnerable to viral infection. Our masks help reduce transmission of contagious diseases. The #immunocompromised and people with #autoimmunedisorders and other health conditions need to stay safe and avoid C19, Flu and RSV, the viruses that are circulating this winter. We need #MaskedHeroes.

“We Love You and Wish you All a Healthy and Safe Holiday! Let’s Stay Hopeful and Support Each Other!” From the #MaskTogetherAmerica team to you!

A school study on Universal Masking by scientists at @HarvardChanSPH, @MassGeneral Hospital, @BUSPH and Boston’s Public Health Commission was published on Nov, 9, one day after the Election Day. Coincident?

CDC director Dr. Walensky called the mask a scarlet letter and led the nation to take a break from masking in spring. Since then, Health officials and the press have avoided the subject until after Election Day.

The school district study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine @NEJM, which proves that rescinding masks allowed the rampant spread of #COVID_19, reopened the debate.

The finding shows that rescinding masks in the #Boston Region alone resulted in 12,000 additional COVID infections from March to June, causing at least 17,500 absences for students and 6,500 absences for staff members.

This powerful study that supports #healthequity was shared by major papers, including the @Washingtonpost, @Time and the @NYTimes.

The findings support on-ramps and off-ramps for mask mandates, Meagan Fitzpatrick, an epidemiologist and infectious-disease transmission modeler at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, told @WashingtonPost.

In response to respiratory infections overwhelming the hospital systems across the country, our nation urgently needs to ramp up on preventative measures. When a hospital system breaks down, everyone is affected.

Respiratory transmission through droplets and aerosols are preventable with masking. The @cdcgov needs to promote the combined benefit of layers of protection, including shots, masks, ventilation, isolation and treatment. We need to see our health officials #maskup and lead by example.

To meet the unprecedented demands in pediatric hospitalizations, Children's Hospital Association and American Academy of Pediatrics asked the federal gov’t to declare an emergency to provide hospitals with added flexibility, which includes temporary removal of bureaucratic barriers in cross-state care, patient transfers, telehealth, creation of off-site triage to manage capacity challenges…also funding and resources. Pediatric providers need prioritization of rental and excess equipment and trained professionals. Our nation’s children are counting on @POTUS to take action.

@CNBC’s heartbreakingly thorough coverage reveals our #frontline’s dire struggles today:
💥 >75% of pediatric beds are occupied across the U.S. ( @HHS.gov )
💥11 states < 20% of pediatric beds left
💥Infants ≤ 6 months hospitalized with RSV at 11 times the rate observed before the pandemic
💥Flu hospitalization at a decade high with children and the #elderly most at risk
💥5 kids died of flu this season
💥#Arizona #DC #RhodeIsland #Texas & #Utah nearly 100% at capacity
💥Flu activity is highest in #Alabama #Georgia #Mississippi #NorthCarolina #SouthCarolina #Tennessee #Virginia and D.C.
💥Arkansas, Louisiana, Maryland, New Mexico, New Jersey, New York City & Texas are seeing high levels of flu-like illness.

Some hospitals are at their breaking point with the surge of #RSV and #Flu because people have largely abandoned masking and social distancing, which suppressed circulation of these viruses, acc. Dr. Jose Romero, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.

Our nation’s health care is back in crisis mode because of:
⛔Staffing shortages
⛔Healthcare worker burnout and left the field.
⛔Large numbers of children being hospitalized for mental issues
⛔Long waits at ER
⛔Diminished Care
⛔Abandoning public health measures, masking and social distancing
⛔Lack of accurate data, awareness and support from government agencies

Pediatric beds are running out in the U.S. due to #RSV, #Flu and #COVID_19 in some states. 100% full in #RhodeIsland. 98% in D.C. 96% in #Arizona. @NBCNews reported, based on @HHSgov data.

We need the @Whitehouse to take action to protect everyone in this Tripledemic. The #frontline needs support.

Dr. Frank Overly said closures of hospitals and pediatric wards in hospitals contributed to the shortage of pediatric beds at Hasbro, the only children’s hospital in Rhode Island. He urges Rhode Island to declare a state of emergency to allocate more funding to pediatric care, address nursing shortages and reduce the burden of paperwork for overwhelmed hospital staffers.

They have to care for kids in adult ER and flex space. Dr. Overly said wait times for non-life-threatening conditions have reached over 8 hours.

Other adult hospitals are sending children that need intensive care to pediatric hospitals in nearby states like Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Doctors urge parents to stay on top of symptoms before taking a child to the ER. Babies & toddlers have smaller airways, mucus can cause breathing problems. If left untreated, severe cases of COVID, RSV or the flu can develop into pneumonia. RSV is also known to cause bronchiolitis. #Immunocompromised children get infections easily – that’s why they are at higher risk of severe illnesses and complications.

Seek immediate help if a child (esp. ≤18mons) is in respiratory distress:
⚠️Breathing fast
⚠️Wheezing
⚠️Nose Flaring
⚠️Using their shoulder or pulling under their ribs to breathe
⚠️Turning blue
⚠️Refusing to eat
⚠️Difficulty urinating
⚠️Fever for over 4 days

We can all help stop the spread. #MaskUp in public. Stay home if you are having symptoms. Protect each other.

#MaskTogetherAmerica really makes sense when 74% of pediatric hospital beds nationwide are occupied due to #COVID, #Flu and #RSV. 89% in #Missori. 91% in #Texas & 99% in #RhodeIsland. @SeattleChildrens Hospital told @NBCNews that it has reached 200% capacity in the ER.

Dr. Kristin Moffit, @BostonChildrens Hospital Infectious Disease Specialist, warned that it’s possible for a child to have a ‘coinfection’, being infected with more than one virus at the same time. #Immunocompromised children get infections easily – that’s why they are at higher risk of severe illnesses and complications.

Doctors urge parents to stay on top of symptoms before taking a child to the ER. Babies & toddlers have smaller airways, mucus can cause breathing problems. Dr. Peter Hotez from @TexasChildrens Hospital said if left untreated, severe cases of COVID, RSV or the flu can develop into pneumonia. RSV is also known to cause bronchiolitis.

⚠️Turning blue
⚠️Refusing to eat
⚠️Difficulty urinating
⚠️Fever for over 4 days

Since these viruses mostly start with an upper respiratory infection, it’s hard to tell which one is causing the congestion, cough, runny nose, muscle aches, fever and headache without testing.

⚠️: At-home Covid tests might not be sensitive enough to detect an infection sometimes. Negative test results don't always mean a person is in the clear. Test at least twice. Dr. Kristin Moffit said a sore throat could be a sign of COVID! Children can be tested for RSV or the flu at the doctor’s office with a multiplex test.
