The City is seeking applications from Cedar Rapids residents for current and upcoming vacancies on many boards, commissions and advisory committees. These advisory groups can be valuable community assets and effective partners with the Mayor, City Council and City staff in guiding the future of our community.

This week the final section of the Alliant Energy LightLine® tower was put in place. It marked a major milestone in the construction of the new pedestrian and trail bridge over the Cedar River near Mount Trashmore.
Here is video of the installation as it happened.

The bridge is the result of a partnership by the City of Cedar Rapids, and the nonprofit organization Connect CR. Standing 164 feet tall, the tower is a focal point of the bridge and a new landmark on Cedar Rapids’ south side. When completed, the tower will feature interior LED lighting that can be programmed in various colors to recognize special occasions in the city.

“This is truly a special day for the many volunteers and local residents who envisioned this bridge, worked on its concept, and donated to it,” said Steve Sovern, a ConnectCR board member who witnessed the tower’s installation. “Seeing the tower go up left me speechless. It’s going to be a terrific destination for our trail system and our city.”

"It is very exciting to be able to see this incredible project taking shape," said the City's Director of Community Development, Jennifer Pratt. "This project represents more than a new iconic addition to our vibrant trail network. It marks the power of partnerships: Connect CR, corporate donors, and countless residents who wanted to invest in the future of our community."

The City is committed to a safe and accessible walking environment for all residents. Routine sidewalk maintenance plays a key role in that goal.

For that reason, the City Council approved the new FY26 Downtown Sidewalk Repair Program in June. Since then, crews are at work repairing sidewalks that need attention. This week, one crew was hard at work at 401 1st Street SE, fixing the sidewalk in front of the Fireside Tavern.
