Turning into a City Year @AmeriCorps member just in time for morning greeting, featuring our ICONIC yellow jacket! 💛✨

Morning greeting is one of our favorite parts of the day! There’s nothing like welcoming students to school with positive energy to help them start off their day strong. ☀️

The curtain opened, and with it, so did a world of possibilities. 🎭📚✨

Ahead of the LA premiere of the Tony Award-winning musical @outsidersmusical, City Year Los Angeles and the Stay Gold Project brought together Los Angeles leaders, and special guests, for a kickoff event celebrating the importance of arts access for young people across the nation.

At our pre-show kick-off, guests heard a powerful conversation between @octaviaspencer, City Year Los Angeles Board Member, @angelinajolie and Hank Unger, Producers of The Outsiders, Jim Balfanz, @cityyear CEO, and Emily Baeza, City Year Los Angeles alum, whose journey has taken her from @americorps member to filmmaker. 🎬💛

Then it was time for our Pio Pico students and AmeriCorps members to experience the story themselves! Thanks to The Stay Gold Project and The Crimson Lion / Lavine Family Foundation, our community attended the premiere and stayed for a special Q&A with members of The Outsiders cast.

And the impact continues far beyond one night: copies of The Outsiders will be donated to Pio Pico Middle School for students to enjoy. 📖

We’re incredibly grateful to our partners for helping us open doors to the arts and create unforgettable experiences for our students and AmeriCorps members.

There is something incredibly powerful about giving a young person the opportunity to see themselves in a story, and even more powerful when we remind them that they get to write their own.

I was honored to join @angelinajolie, @outsidersmusical, and @cityyearla to bring 35 incredible students from Pio Pico Middle School to see The Outsiders at the Pantages. For some, it was their first experience seeing a live play.

I’ve been fortunate to have educators and mentors who saw something in me before I could fully see it in myself. That kind of encouragement can change the trajectory of a life.

That’s why I’m asking you to join me in supporting the incredible work of The Stay Gold Project and City Year.

If you’re able, please click the two links in my bio to donate to both organizations and help create more opportunities for young people to discover their voice, imagine what’s possible and believe in their own story.

Thank you for helping us give the next generation a chance to stay gold 💛 by @cityyearla

Service doesn’t stop at the schoolhouse doors. 💛🏫

Every year, our AmeriCorps members tell us that one of the most meaningful (and unexpected) parts of service is becoming part of the communities they serve.

That inspired our new Community Connection Challenge! Throughout the year, our school teams are stepping beyond campus to explore local businesses, discover neighborhood favorites, visit community spaces, and build deeper connections to the places their students call home.📍✨

Our team serving at Hillcrest Dr. Elementary School took on the challenge, exploring the Baldwin Hills community surrounding their school! Swipe to see how they spent their day. ➡️

Consider this your sign to get your @cityyear group chat back together. 💛

We’ve felt SO MUCH love from our alumni community this year. From joining us for career panels, to participating in our signature events, and much more, we couldn’t be more grateful for all of the alumni who have shown up for our current @americorps members, reconnected, and continued to champion @cityyearla.

Now, we want YOU to help us keep the momentum going.

As we look ahead to City Year LA’s 20th anniversary, we’re growing our Alumni Council, a group of alumni helping us create more opportunities to reconnect, plan networking mixers, and support the next generation of AmeriCorps members.

Interested in getting back involved? Send us a DM to learn more! And alumni, sound off below with your graduation year. 🎓👇

What if your year of service is just the beginning of your journey into education? 📚✨

Through partnerships with universities and community organizations, @cityyear helps corps members access resources, benefits, and opportunities that reduce barriers as they pursue careers in education.

At last week’s Teaching Pathways Panel, our @americorps members connected with @marshallteacherresidency, @aldergse, @uscrossier, @teachstarter, @teachforamerica, @universityofredlands, and @alliantu, to learn about opportunities available to them after their year of service to continue pursuing a career in education.

They also heard from @cityyearla alum Hayden Parsley, whose own path took him from City Year to the Marshall Teacher Residency, and now back to the community he once served, this time as a teacher. 💛

We’re so grateful to this group for helping our AmeriCorps members see where a year of service could take them next!

We had a blast volunteering at the first-ever @comicreliefus Neighborhood Fest LA this past weekend! 🎉💛

While our staff connected with guests and shared more about @cityyear’s mission, our @americorps members supported guest experience and helped assemble Care Kits for local students, complete with backpacks, books, and other back-to-school essentials. 🎒📚

Thank you for having us, Comic Relief! There’s no better way to spend a Saturday than in service alongside our community. ❤️

Curious about @cityyearla but couldn’t join us at the event? Visit our LinkTree at the link in our bio to learn more about who we are, what we do, and how you can connect with us.

Earlier this month, Board Member Ortiz Franklin attended @cityyearla Back to Service Celebration to join our community to welcome 170 new AmeriCorps to begin a year of service in our schools across LAUSD. As a former AmeriCorps member herself, she shared her personal experience, celebrated the impact of AmeriCorps in our schools, and joined the new members in reciting the AmeriCorps pledge to begin their year of service. Thank you @cityyearla for the invitation. It was a wonderful evening and so nice to be part of it! 💛
