Rebels with a cause, shaking up the status quo for kind and connected communities. Also @zachmanntai, because Meta killed my other handle.

This poem has been living in me for a while.

There is a season I’m in right now where I’ve found myself advocating for someone who can’t advocate for himself, running up against systems that were tired and stretched, and feeling the quiet social pressure to step back, stay in my lane, protect my peace. I am still trying to find the line between love and self-destruction, between care and control, between showing up and being crushed.

PostMortem Interventionist

This isn't a call to quit. It's a call to build better.

There are people in every organization, every community, every neighbourhood who hold things together by sheer force of presence. They translate pain into plans. They carry what no one budgets for. And we call it passion, as if that's a funding model.

I wrote this for them. I wrote this because I'm tired of watching good people disappear so broken systems can survive.

We lost an amazing companion unexpectedly yesterday. Loss is never easy, and sudden loss does not make it any easier.

If you have ever gone for a walk with me and Daisy, you know how hard this has been.

She came to us as a six month old rescue, carrying severe anxiety and a history of abuse. The stories of her breaking through window screens just to be where her people were. Torn nails (and the bloody messes) from our attempts at crate training her. Nail marks still etched into my desk from when she tried to get out through my office window.

And yet, this dog was a balm to so many souls. In her nine years with us, she was an anchor for our family, a kindness to strangers, and she ran like a bat out of hell at the dog park. Her demeanor was defined by joy and a deep love of life.

Last fall, the loss of two cats marked the passing of time. This year, it is this. Our kids have weathered the storm, but grief and lament take their toll. On them. On us.

As I write this, tears are streaming down my face. This is so hard. Charlie. Zeus. Daisy. These have been my friends, my companions through so much. And yes, memories fade, but their mark on our lives remains. Not just in the hair that somehow persists everywhere.

I was explaining to the kids that we Manntais love big, and that often means we grieve big too. I would not have it any other way.

Goodbye, sweet girl. by @civilcabal

I voted.

I know that communities often fight over WHO to vote for, but less than 50% of Calgarians (eligible voters) voted in the last municipal election.

This might be counterintuitive, but I actually don’t want to spend my time convincing you of WHO to vote for, but I hope that today you make an informed decision and GET OUT AND VOTE! by @civilcabal
