I grew up reading @newyorkermag around my grandfather’s kitchen table. I’ve loved @vincealettiarchive writing on photography and his approach to collecting and living with it for years. It’s an honor to read Vince’s words on ‘Down by the Hudson’ in the New Yorker this morning. Thank you Vince for your generous read of the work. Photography can be a lonely pursuit until you build a book and a show with people you admire. The show is up @palogallery until October 3rd at 21 E. 3rd Street. by @cjbstein

“It’s all in pursuit of trying to capture this thing in all its dimensional- ity before it’s lost. Not in a nostalgic way, but I think something in its twilight is just more acutely what it is, and we can understand it better because the picture is almost complete. It’s almost resolved in its tra- jectory. And I think art is the right place for that inquiry, because it is kind of the final frontier of the analog, the thing in a room, the thing that gathers dust,” says @mungothomson in conversation with @mklombino in September Project’s first publication, ‘Map of Maps’. [ DISCUSSION & BOOK SIGNING ]

We are delighted to invite you to a discussion around the photobook "Down by the Hudson" by artist Caleb Stein (@cjbstein), in conversation with curator Victoria Aresheva (@vicaresheva), followed by a book signing at the bookstore.

Join us for a special opportunity to meet Caleb Stein and discover his photographic practice, developed over a decade of summers spent photographing a creek in Poughkeepsie, New York. Since 2013, Stein has returned to the same stretch of water each year, observing the recurring rhythms of friendship, gathering, and care that shape this communal space. What began as a documentary project gradually evolved into a lyrical and tender ode to the freedom and Edenic sense of community that the place evokes.

Stein is also the co-author of American Glitch, created in collaboration with Andrea Orejarena, and one of the founders and an editor of the recently launched photography magazine September Projects.

Would love to see you all soon and celebrate this launch together !!!

🗣️ The discussion will be held in English.
🎟️ Free admission, registration required (link in bio).

October 17th is going to be a great day at CPW: photographer Caleb Stein will host a one-day workshop, "Paying Close Attention" focusing on how the act of attention on one place or subject becomes a kind of ritual that enriches perception. The workshop starts by exploring Stein's experience photographing a Hudson Valley swimming hole for more than a decade, as well as other photographers' work, and then moves into looking at participants' work: photographers may bring prints, an iPad or laptop, or share files in advance for projection; no formal presentation is required.

More info and sign ups at LINK IN BIO.

Third and fourth slides are the text @anicurateslife wrote for the book of the work. Anita’s text looks at these two images as a launching point for her poetic reflections. Anita included some works from ‘Down by the Hudson’ in her show ‘Love Languages’ @mfahouston a couple of years ago, and it was a pleasure to collaborate again for this publication. by @cjbstein

Happening today— from 12-2PM join Leica Gallery Boston for a conversation with Caleb Stein about his practice and new publication ‘Down by the Hudson’

‘Down by the Hudson’ presents over a decade of summers Caleb Stein spent photographing a creek in Poughkeepsie, New York. Since 2013, Stein has returned to the same stretch of water each year, observing the recurring rhythms of friendship, gathering, and care that define this communal space.

Caleb Stein is a multimedia artist currently based in the U.S. His conceptual, documentary work often takes the form of photographic installations, multi-channel video works, and artist books that engage with questions around the collective, community, and the relationship between photography, perception, and memory.
