The installation explores the connections between two independent approaches to photography, publishing, and image-making. DOWN BY THE HUDSON 🌊 What happens when we let our guard down in a place with no rules, no fees, and no questions asked? Can a body of water become the very medium that holds our vulnerability and connects us across political divides?

A month after @photobookmania_, we are happy to host American photographer @cjbstein who will present his photobook Down By The Hudson at @phmuseumlab on Thursday 5 November at 6:30 pm.

Stein documents a place where people gather in defiance of county regulations and a political climate that has made meeting near water feel like an act of resistance. Made over a third of his life, these photographs look closely at what the creek releases in the men who come to it – a tenderness, a lowering of guard, and a vulnerability the rest of their lives may not permit.

Un mese dopo @photobookmania_, siamo felici di ospitare il fotografo americano @cjbstein che presenterà il suo libro fotografico Down By The Hudson al @phmuseumlab giovedì 5 novembre alle 18:30.

Stein documenta un luogo in cui le persone si radunano in sfida ai regolamenti locali e a un clima politico che ha reso l'atto di incontrarsi vicino all'acqua un gesto di resistenza. Realizzate nell'arco di un terzo della sua vita, queste fotografie osservano da vicino ciò che il fiume libera negli uomini che lo frequentano: una tenerezza, un abbassamento delle difese e una vulnerabilità che il resto della loro vita potrebbe non consentire.

A single swimming hole on Wappinger Creek, outside Poughkeepsie in the Hudson Valley, is the whole subject of Down by the Hudson, the black-and-white series Caleb Stein built across more than a decade of returning.

On the edge of Poughkeepsie, where Wappinger Creek pools into a swimming hole between a drive-in movie theater and an American Legion, Stein found a patch of common ground the town has leaned on for generations. Even the officers sent to clear it out, he notes, bring their own families here. “It’s a space that somehow belongs to everyone and to no one,” he tells Daniel Wolff in the book’s conversation.

October 17th is going to be a great day at CPW: photographer Caleb Stein will host a one-day workshop, "Paying Close Attention" focusing on how the act of attention on one place or subject becomes a kind of ritual that enriches perception. The workshop starts by exploring Stein's experience photographing a Hudson Valley swimming hole for more than a decade, as well as other photographers' work, and then moves into looking at participants' work: photographers may bring prints, an iPad or laptop, or share files in advance for projection; no formal presentation is required.

‘Down by the Hudson’ presents over a decade of summers Caleb Stein spent photographing a creek in Poughkeepsie, New York. Since 2013, Stein has returned to the same stretch of water each year, observing the recurring rhythms of friendship, gathering, and care that define this communal space.

Caleb Stein is a multimedia artist currently based in the U.S. His conceptual, documentary work often takes the form of photographic installations, multi-channel video works, and artist books that engage with questions around the collective, community, and the relationship between photography, perception, and memory.
