A lovely quilty gift from a dear quilty friend, who was fortunate enough to attend the First Day of Issue Dedication Ceremony last week for the new @uspostalservice Harriet Powers quiltmaker commemorative stamp. ❤️🪡🧵🫶 Her Bible Quilt is my all-time favorite quilt. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending @zakfoster.quilts #SouthernWhiteAmnesia exhibit at @sqtmuseum. Standing room only for the artist talk of his first solo exhibit!! 👏👏👏 An incredible and impactful body of work and an inspiring, thought-provoking talk. 🙌❤️ While familiar with this series through his website and podcasts (https://www.zakfoster.com/southern-white-amnesia), it was simultaneously poignant and joyful to experience the pieces in person—and even touch them!!! 👉💃❤️ Big thanks to Zak for the permission to do so. 🙏 It was one of the few times at an exhibit that @lavone55 and I didn’t get into trouble for getting too close to the art! 😊 ❤️🪡🧵🫶

Sometimes the quilt narrates the story for you.

This quilt was begun as a “map quilt” prompt during @zakfoster.quilts Narrative Quilt Making class at @penlandschool @penlandtextiles Spring Concentration 2025. The map details a neighborhood friendship. A memory is recorded with each stitch. As the stitching became denser, the memories became darker and the emotions became heavier, culminating at the end of the week with the news of the euthanasia of a beloved dog, Charlie. This quilt is a “living quilt” that will be continually added to, until the day when we are no longer neighbors.

Today, as @heidiparkes #SoftMagicExhibition at @wmquiltfiberarts comes to a close, I am remembering the magical weekend spent with friends at the opening reception. I am also reflecting back on this beautiful exhibition and processing what it meant to me to have a quilt of mine included.

I had long dreamed of living a more creative life and being a maker in retirement. Until 2023, my sights had been set on making various styles of rag rugs. My maker goals changed upon meeting Heidi - I now wanted to focus on making quilts and began to embrace the label “quilter.” But, even as a student in her 2024 yearlong class Quiltmaking: Aesthetics, Curiosity, Efficiency, I struggled with the idea of making art and calling myself an artist.

To have my quilt “make/disturb” - my first quilt to be born solely out of my own creative process, without instruction or a prompt from a book, class, workshop, or retreat - to have my quilt included in a curated selection of work from Heidi’s students, to have my quilt hang in a quilt museum…this wasn’t even a dream come true - it was a dream so big that I didn’t know it existed!

It’d be an understatement to say I was overwhelmed walking into the museum, seeing my quilt hanging in the lobby, and having a name tag labeled “artist” waiting for me. Viewing all of Heidi’s quilts together only added to the emotional overload. Luckily, I was not alone. I got to experience all this alongside my fellow classmates in attendance (@spiritquilter, @threegirlpileup, @aimeee.walker, @scsarchet, @luludrifter, @bloomsdaymakes, @selinatoedter) - many of us who had never met in person before. My heart was full.

I will be forever grateful to Heidi for being my teacher, mentor, and friend and for giving me the confidence to be an artist. Soft Magic indeed! taken in Wisconsin Museum of Quilts & Fiber Arts by @cjuska

Delightful day yesterday with @lavone55 at @ath_ica inaugural #StudioFest! Thanks to all the artists who welcomed us into their studios: @donchambersstudio, @thehomewardstudio,  @margaretagner, @gooddirt_athens, @motivatedmanslayer, @paulareynaldi, @laurenzichner, @wildharedrawing, @wildharepress, @flimmyflammy, @mickeyoscarboyd, @joni_younkins_herzog, @herzog_sculptor, @adahbennion, @s.h.horgan, @bolo.bolo.ath, @salvagesparrow, @mgbrwnstn, @didi.dunphy, @habibiart, and @lfancher. Thoroughly enjoyed meeting the artists and seeing their work. Disappointed that we couldn’t hit all of the studios in one day!
No surprise I was particularly taken with the work of MFA student @adahbennion, who made, among numerous other fantastical creations, an 8 pt star quilt from plastic grocery bags, tapestries woven of strips of patterned security envelopes, paper quilt blocks from said envelopes and maps, drawings embroidered with plastic string, and garments of plastic film and pine straw. A few other highlights include the works of @donchambersstudio , @paulareynaldi, @flimmyflammy, @s.h.horgan, @wildharedrawing, and @lfauncher taken in Athens, Georgia by @cjuska

Home now after 8 weeks quilting at @penlandtextiles with @zakfoster.quilts and the #PenlandQuiltingTeam. I am exhausted but sooo full. Physically full from three delicious meals a day, cookies from @penlandcoffeehouse, and studio snacks. Mentally full from new quilt prompts for six weeks straight, 10 hour quilt challenges, and endless inspiration from Zak and my fellow classmates (@mckennakellner @reesquinnn @carolineseamons @erincdohertystudio @chinabodina @catherine.paul.distanced @elizabethekurtz @billjrjr @art.hour.mayhem and @elephant.soup @mariatuckerjewelry), the other studio instructors (@ericaemoody @ayaokidoki @markmelonas @jostealey.art @klineola @awmetalsmith), studio assistants, @penlandcorefellows, @penlandresidentartists, and a studio visit from favorite artist @casey__engel. Emotionally full from the friendships made and the mutual love and respect shared within the magical community that is @penlandschool. To live for two months in a bubble of creativity has been the greatest retirement gift I could give myself. ❤️🪡🧵 taken in Penland School of Crafts by @cjuska
