Data centers aren't just a tech issue. They're a community issue. 🌎

Data centers moving into our communities has become a hot topic as of late – including with recent regulations about data centers being passed in our backyard in Arkansas.

In "How Literacy Educators Can Support Data Center Resistance", the University of Arkansas's Dr Megan McIntyre (@rcmeg) and Dr Maggie Fernandes (@maggiestag) write about how communities across the US are pushing back against data centers and the role that literacy educators have to play in the fight.

It's Latiné Heritage Month!

To celebrate, we're highlighting a few trailblazing Latiné folx who have done the work, changed the culture, and meaningful contributed to the communities they were/are a part of.

⚾️ Roberto Clemente
MLB Hall of Famer and Humantiarian. He went from working sugar cane fields in Peurto Rico to World Series champion – but never forgot his roots. When not playing, he dedicated his life to providing opportunities to disadvantaged youth and organizing humantiarian aid to Central and South America.

✊ Dolores Huerta (@doloreshuerta)
A leading labor leader and civil rights activist. Dolores co-founded United Farm Workers and several other organizations, working tirelessly to make sure that workers are treated fairly and we all share equal rights.

🎶 Cardi B (@iamcardib)
From working class roots in the Bronx, Cardi B became the first female rapper with a Diamond-certified single. She uses her platform to positively change the culture through activism and highlighting important issues.

🖊️ Daniel José Older (@danieljose1)
Fantasy and YA author best know for his work on the Afro-Latiné centered Shadowshaper series and Star Wars novels. Older is an outspoken voice on the need to promote diversity in the publishing industry – stopping the whitewashing of characters and stories.

💅 Bianca del Rio (@thebiancadelrio)
One of the brightest stars to come out of RuPaul's Drag Race, Bianca has brought Latine and LGBTQIA+ visibility to mainstream audiences. She continues to do so through her fierce brand of comedy and performance.

What Latiné voices inspire you? Let us know in the comments below 👇

To round out our series for #NationalLiteracyMonth, we’re going to talk about a big one that gets overlooked: 💰Financial Literacy

There’s a big industry around personal finance – but for the average person trying to wrangle their finances, it can be overwhelming and hard to know where to start.

🧱 Build The Foundation
Before you jump into things like investing or treasury yields, start small: start tracking what goes in and out every month, learn how different bank accounts / credit cards work, and how to build an emergency fund.

🧠 Find A Financial Philosophy That Works For You
Different things work for different folks, and that’s especially true for personal finances. There are various creators and resources out there to help you change how you think about money. Some of the popular ones include:
- Tiffany Aliche (@thebudgetnista) - The Budgetnista, a Black educator and activist focused on financial literacy
- Humphrey Yang (@humphreytalks) – YouTuber & TikTok creator focused on clear, easy-to-understand breakdowns of basic concepts
- Tori Dunlap (@torikdunlap) - Financial Feminist focused on supporting women’s financial journeys
- Ramit Sethi (@ramit) – Author of popular book “I Will Teach You To Be Rich”, focused on spending on what matters

📊 Learn to Make A Budget
One of the most fundamental, and often challenging, pieces of financial literacy is how to build a budget that makes sense for your family. Luckily, there are lots of tools out there to get you started, such as YNAB, myMoney.gov, or even your bank.

👩🏾‍🏫 Take a Finance Class
These can be fun, interactive ways to learn how to handle finances if books and podcasts aren’t for you. There are many free ones online or you can check your local library.

📙 Search for Free Resources
There are tons of helpful resources online to help you get started on your financial literacy journey. From Nerdwallet to myMoney.gov to Khan Academy, it all depends on your style of learning.

What have you found helpful on your financial literacy journey?

If you're chronically online like we are, you've probably seen cries about "the death of media literacy." But what does that actually mean?

How we engage with media has changed drastically over the centuries, and many feel short-form content and opinions based on summaries (instead of source material) have led to a decline in our ability to understand media.

So if you feel like you need to brush up on your media literacy, here's how we'd do it:

❓Question Everything
To understand any piece, ask yourself:
- Who created this?
- Why did they create it?
- Who was the intended audience?
- What message were they trying to convey?
- What are the themes you notice?

🔎 Verify the Facts
Just because something is written or recorded, doesn’t make it fact. Check the source material and verify with other trusted sources.

⏱️ Slow Down, Do A Double Take
Didn’t understand what just happened in the show you’re watching? Book passage not making sense? Pause, rewind, and take a second look.

⚖️ Check for Bias / Credibility
As humans, we inherently have biases that bleeds into the media we produce. Try to identify those biases (even if you agree with them) and try to understand alternative viewpoints (even if you disagree) for a comprehensive, informed view. Also, a reminder we all need – your algorithm is designed to keep you online, not keep you informed.

😵‍💫 Learn to Spot Manipulation Tactics
We see these everyday – clickbait headlines, plays to emotion, deepfake videos. Get to know common manipulation tricks, understand how they can skew your opinions, and take a second to verify the facts before joining the keyboard wars.

What are your top tips to improve media literacy?

📜 It’s Constitution Day! On this day 239 years ago, the US Constitution was signed and the federal government as we know it was created.

A lot has changed since then – and it can still be unclear exactly how the government works, what rights have been our founding documents bestow, and where specific rights come from. Here’s a couple ideas on how you can improve your civics knowledge:

📽️ Watch SchoolHouse Rock - If you were a child in American schools in the 90s and 00s, there’s a good chance you’ve seen at least one SchoolHouse Rock video, such as “I’m Just a Bill” or “Three-Ring Government”. These short, animated snippets give high-level overviews of key US Government concepts and history and are good for understanding the most basic principles of our government.

📱 Explore Government Resources - Different departments have loads of educational resources in various languages to help both residents and those abroad learn more about the Constitution, how the branches work together, and even how to use the Constitution to practice your reading skills.

🏛️ Check Your Local Library – Most libraries have copies of the founding documents, can help you get registered to vote, and some may even have specific Constitution Day programming to learn more about the government.

The better we all understand how our government works, the better we can make our voices heard and build a stronger community.
