What can your gift to CLACS make possible? 💛

A lot!

Our Working Groups bring together graduate students and faculty from across Berkeley to develop ideas, share research, and build intellectual community. Give to CLACS during this crowdfund campaign! Here’s what your support can do:

$25 → Put a student in the room
Help cover transportation to an exhibition, archive, or lecture.

$100 → Make a workshop possible
Provide books and research materials for students.

$250 → Connect expertise to Berkeley
Bring a leading scholar into a Working Group for focused mentorship.

$500 → Expand the conversation
Help sponsor a campus-wide public event.

$1,500 → Power a Working Group for a year
Support an intellectual home for up to 15 graduate students.

Every gift helps strengthen the interdisciplinary community at CLACS. Donate through the link in our bio.

On the CLACS Blog: Revista Rosa, the Brazilian publication, describes itself as an "órgão de intervenção na luta pela democracia e pela justiça social" ("intervention organ in the fight for democracy and social justice"). Justin Greene (Anthropology), a 25-26 CLACS Graduate Affiliate who wrote and translated for the Revista, writes about that experience. And our congratulations to Justin for successfully completing his dissertation during his stint at CLACS! Read "Introducing the Intervention Organ" on the CLACS blog through the Linktree in our bio.

Join us on Tuesday, October 13 for a talk by Maria Carolina Tomás (PUC Minas). In Brazil, the frequency of interracial unions is sometimes cited as proof of harmonious relations between racial groups. In a talk for CLACS, Professor Tomás questions that conclusion, drawing on evidence from national surveys and interviews to analyze whether such unions are transcending or maintaining racial boundaries. Tue 10/13, 12 pm PT, 310 Social Sciences Building and on Zoom | Read more and find the Zoom link for the event in the Linktree in our bio!

“I am still so thankful for the home that the Center has always given me.” — Tianna Paschel, CLACS Faculty Director and Associate Professor of African American Studies and Sociology

More than 20 years ago, Tianna was a graduate student at Berkeley and co-founded the Afrolatino Working Group. Like many graduate students, she struggled to find scholars in her department working on her area of research. But through CLACS, she found a community of scholars working across different disciplines, histories, languages, and geographies.

Together, they read, broke bread, provided feedback, and organized symposia featuring graduate students, musical performances, and scholars from around the world.

Today, Tianna leads CLACS—and our Working Groups continue to provide that same sense of intellectual community and belonging for a new generation of students.

Help us make sure CLACS remains a home for students for decades to come. 💛 Donate through the link in our bio.

What if the next groundbreaking idea about migration, climate justice, improving the rule of law, or fighting infectious disease comes from a graduate student at Berkeley — but they don’t have the resources to pursue it?

TODAY, CLACS is starting a CrowdFund campaign to support the next generation of research on Latin America through our Working Group program. Your donation will provide interdisciplinary groups of graduate students the space, community, and resources to create scholarship that is more ambitious, more collaborative, and better able to address the complicated problems of our world.

We have set an ambitious goal of $5000, which we have to reach by Oct 31. Support graduate research and donate today! See our Linktree to donate! by @clacsberkeley

On the CLACS Blog: The term "indio" for an Indigenous American developed as both a motivated mistake in geography and as an intellectual need and strategy of colonizing empires. Ramón de Santiago (History of Art), a 25-26 CLACS Graduate Affiliate, analyzes this history. Read "Indios Everywhere" through the Linktree in our bio.

Science draws on many sources of knowledge. Gerardo Aldana (UC Santa Barbara) pushes the history of science beyond its typical Eurocentrism. The Mayan civilization developed sophisticated scientific and mathematical frameworks over thousands of years, knowledge marginalized by colonial expansion. Through studying Mayan astronomy, we can understand and revitalize that legacy. Join us!
