Back to that question of “the maker” vs “the theorist”... Dutch/South African artist Claire de Jong practically runs for the hills if anyone asks her to comment on her work on the record. It’s rather ironic. Because, Claire is one of the very few artists who I think moves effortlessly between her skill as a painter (for which she was originally educated) and a that of a sculptor.

I think she should not worry about not speaking about her work (if only more artists would shut up). It speaks volumes for itself. And, that very thing, that thing that sees her focussing on the minutiae of technique and perfecting it, she worries people overlook, is exactly where a lot of her power lies. Don’t assume that because she is not “a theorist”, that her work is not informed by deep conceptual understanding. Quite the opposite. If you look closely at one of her abstract paintings, built up in delicate layers learned from Dutch 17th-century painting techniques (and indeed referencing the palette), we really do enter into the truism of a picture saying a thousand words and none of them are simplistic descriptors.

Many women artists still live in the shadow of systematic control by men. And some even feel intimidated by fellow women artists more verbose and articulate than them. Sad, but so be it. For me, I included Claire’s paintings in a show when she retreated to non-verbal in the corner at a gallery opening and a cacophony of women theorists were bellowing at me about why their work was important. If art can speak to us, at least I know when it’s important to listen.

I’m really pleased that Claire is currently finding a place for inspiration amongst fellow artists at @oovookoo Johannesburg. Watch this space...
