I wish I could say otherwise. This is ultimately for @clairedejongartist and my brother Alastair who can remember when the only way to get to St Helena was on a mail ship from Cape Town.

I can’t be a more conducive host in the light of unfolding reality…

Nah, you don’t actually need the pancetta, butternut squash and fresh sage details that went with this carnaroli risotto bad boy. Great, obviously, but also in another headspace….

Where and how and why and who and are they here…? Somewhere between the mail ships to St Helena (and, yes, @clairedejongartist knows what I mean) or the kids who embraced that wine, too, could be produced outside of the patriarchal colonial narrative there was a magical space for me that opened up decades ago.

Tonight I am just playing with my boyfriend Luc, a particularly good risotto and our beloved @angiereed44

Zoom in close on the label: it is an astonishing pinto noir…

Hahaha. I thought I was looking at the traffic on my cooking blog and there was this big-ass spike. Then I clocked the page names and realised it was the truenorthproject.org site for the show at @galeria_fermay

Of course the kids should be looking at it now; such a great show…

Sailors are the least political and most political of all. Why d’ya think some of them went to sea?

But, my cousin and I, even as wee nippers, felt part of this amongst the beardy, Arran jumper-wearing men who’d be able to harmonise perfectly during an Atlantic squall. Not to mention ‘Barbara Bobbly Bags’, the first transatlantic woman “sparks” who couldn’t wait to take her place when the barber put all the lads in his chair…

I’m not getting into this in detail, not least of all for not wanting to be dragged in for questioning (again). But, we learned early the notion of loyalty to a crew. You figure out what that f**king crew was.

I’ll say only this: on a ship you have limited options and the people that made it safe for you were the magic people on this (blue) planet.

When @clairedejongartist and I were kids (and, indeed, until not that long ago), you could take one of the regularly scheduled mail ships from Cape Town down to St Helena, the South Atlantic island famous for being the rock on which Napoleon lived out his days.

We still grin. Few do. But you start high-fiving when you’ve done the voyage multiple times simply because of the beauty of the place if for nothing else.

pick ’n mix (noun): a selection of items chosen according to personal taste, especially from a variety of options.

This exhibition invites you into an open field of creative expression—unfiltered, uncurated, and unapologetically diverse. All works on show are made by the creatives who work at @oovookoo, each selecting what they wanted to share, free of curatorial direction or hierarchy.

Now it’s your turn to choose. Take your time. Notice what speaks to you. Place a sticker beside the work that resonates most. Here, your personal preference matters. Your response completes the show.

Ooovookoo will be open on Sunday 31 August from 10am – 5pm. Get your tickets now! Link to tickets in BIO!

Nominative determinism. My name is Kenneth (nah, not the whole bullshite name) but that is what my Da’ called me and what my bestie @krismodem calls me (or “Kenny” if bemused”). Only @clairedejongartist is allowed to call me Kenny because she was on the ship and later, when @morvenscott went there, I was happy for it to happen because she is a person filled with love, acceptance and not a c**t.

@gina.dorio calls me “Albert”. And I love it. It is one of the names with which I was christened and an ancestral name with which I identify. This is my “Gina name”. I’m there already.

I re-styled my name to align with the dickless boyfriend of Barbie because the Gaelic meaning of my name is so embarrassing. Okay, so that’s Version One. The greater truth (yes, I’ve spent enough time with therapists) is that I was creating a persona, a mask pushing people back, where even my name requires backstage clearance to get there. Go figure.

You can call me Ken or Kenneth. But only Claire and Morven can call me Kenny.

Don’t look at the Jermyn St monk strap shoes I’m wearing to the opera. I have never hidden that I’m only two scratches away from the wild. I am ultimately barefoot.

My Granny Bertha once caught me poring over a colour print of this and told me it was “uncouth to admire any seascape except for Dutch seascapes”.

“Yes, Granny, but you gave me this book!”

“Not the point, dear.”

The truth is I have lived this painting. It would be easy to jump to the homoerotic place. Don’t get me wrong: I often have. But, if you’re not seeing her here, then you’re the complacent misogynist. I don’t remember growing up in a world in which young women weren’t involved in a group of kids trying to really not f**k up with a yacht…

And, no, obviously it wasn’t 1939.

I’m bringing in the big guns now: Erna @labelsinc ; Koen @__akino___ ; and Claire @clairedejongartist ; and Brian @briangetsabout .

I am blessed to love a unique man. Nah, not painting a picture of a saint painted by the naive. I’m merely asserting there are enough people who will testify that he is a mensch.
