GIVE ME TIL MIDNIGHT by Oran Doyle (@doyle_oran) – Harmony has dropped out of school and she's working in her mum's café. Then she meets Liam, the self-proclaimed King of Dublin – who's stuck in a 24-hour time loop. Afraid that she's caught in a loop too, Harmony convinces Liam to give her til midnight to break the cycle.

I loved this book – it sees Dublin with a lot of specificity and a lot of love. Harmony's story has the potential to really help teen readers who are having a tough time. Liam is always entertaining and, as more is revealed, fascinating – the story digs into the mindframe and the fatalism of a time loop. Which, of course, isn't only about time loops. I was very moved by the end. And it's funny! There's a lovely gentle wit to it, the two of them bounce off one another very nicely, and it moves at a fierce clip. And I never knew a novel could have a cameo! Great stuff altogether.

The launch is on in Books Upstairs, Dublin on Wednesday, 9 September at 6.30pm. See you there?

Just finished the second draft of my novel 🙂

It's called The Book of Prosper, and it's an Irish mythology YA about a magic Limerick underneath Limerick.

It is also about a girl named Dearbhla Donn, who has to save her captured girlfriend. So she enlists the help of Luke, who is Normal Boy from Normal Town, Limerick citayyy. But then Dearbhla and Luke fancy each other. And obviously they only make good decisions from there...

Here also is my big celebratory meal and the sunset over the River Shannon. I was sitting down looking at that sunset for a while because I ate too much.

When all of this is done I will have a longer list of people to thank. But for this draft I received an insane amount of support from @kidsbooksirel, @tyroneguthriecentre, and my mentor for 2025 @daveruddenwrites. Because of them, I know what to do next; without them, I would be somewhere worse. Up a tree maybe.

Of course this is all going to become bittersweet soon, because I'm leaving Limerick before the end of the year. Writing this is part of how I fell in love with the city. Soon it'll be a love letter to a place I left behind. Which maybe all YA is.

What's next? Next I will lie down (ate too much). But after that I will do another developmental draft, i.e. make all the right things happen in the right order.

It will be a good while yet before it's on bookshelves, but that's okay. I love this story, I love my idiot teenagers, and I'm happy to stay here for as long as it takes. Onwards and upwards! taken in Limerick City by @claralaherty

A massive thank you to everyone who came to the launch of Heretic Pride, our trans arts booklet as part of Limerick Alt Pride. It was lovely being the Prose and Poetry Editor on this. Message @translimerick if you want a copy!

My favourite thing about projects like these is that it finds trans people who are making a start on their craft and, hopefully, encourages them to keep at it. It's been said (by LeGuin I think) that if you find any success, it's your responsibility to throw a ladder down for the next person. I've had that kindness paid to me and I want to pay it forward.

(On a more personal note, I'm leaving Ireland this year. No date set yet. So helping this booklet get made was kind of a goodbye.)

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲 | 𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝟴 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆, 𝟯𝗽𝗺 | 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲'𝘀 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺

We've been hard at work on this one all year – a 24-page booklet of poetry, short fiction, and visual art by trans artists from across the island of Ireland.

The artworks use the symbols of our old mythology and paganism to depict queer life, the life on the fringe, the despair and the hope.

Amazing work by the contributors: @katemoorewrites, Ráitseach, @cupid_fried_rice, @bec_kart, Fiadh Nic Aoibhinn, @flo.raldisaster, @aylakcekirge, @jack_trehy, and @yaknook.

Adventures in Thailand with Kim!

1. At the foot of the 306-step Naga staircase on Doi Suthep, leading up to the temple of the same name

TLC is happy to launch Heretic! An alternative pride happening on the 9th-11th of July.

As the world grows more hostile and attempts to push us to the fringes, Heretic is about
reclaiming power and revelling in existing outside the status quo. Like our pagan ancestors
fleeing desolation, we will keep the traditions of the weird and wonderful alive through revelry
and being unapologetically ourselves. Focusing on the joy of community between the outcast
and the rejection of the norm.

The alternative slate of events will run concurrently to the main pride and will focus on queer and trans+ voices through art, poetry, writing and performance. Though trans led, Heretic! Is open to all to attend and is being organised with some brilliant voices from the community,

Not mine! This one is an excerpt from @k_chiu_art's as-yet-unpublished novel 'emma + josie':

"Josie is nineteen, Singaporean, aching to leave the only home she’s ever known. In the long, aimless months between school and university, Josie feels rootless and stuck – until she meets Emma, who travels in time.

"Emma is strange and clever. Emma trusts Josie with her pain. Emma is drowning, but Josie can handle it. Josie needs to be needed, and Emma needs her.

"A coming of age story and a love story, emma + josie is a book about history, the future, and loving what you cannot save."

Or: her mouth on Emma’s, because that’s how it happened, isn’t it – Josie’s action, Josie’s choice. Emma’s lips part and then so do Josie’s; Emma’s breath is in her face, her throat, her lungs, and Josie sucks it down. Draws it in like breathing, which it is. Which maybe it has been, for a long time.
Emma makes a sound like surprise, like a shocked and foreign hunger; and then she’s leaning closer, closer though they’re already touching, brushes their noses together, sucks hard on Josie’s lower lip. Emma kisses back like that, eager, needy, and Josie lets her. Tries to move like she’s moving, tries to do it right. Her heart hammering like a caged thing, kicking at her chest. by @claralaherty
