This piece kind of destroyed me … I’ve lived inside it for such a long time. Coming soon at the Donaueschinger Musiktage in October. by @claranoise

At the beginning,
when I was asked to write a violin concerto,
I said no.

I said:
ā€œI have nothing to say with violin.ā€

Carolin Widmann called me anyway.

She said beautiful things.
ā€œDangerousā€ things.
Things composers want to hear.

I said:
ā€œI think I will fail.ā€
She said:
ā€œThen let’s fail together.ā€

Which honestly became
a surprisingly accurate description
of the whole story …

But somehow,
through cancellations,
silence,
and way too many emotions,
the piece survived.

And now the ensemble version exists.

Carolin Widmann.
Elena Schwarz.
Klangforum Wien.
Konzerthaus Vienna.

You can listen to it online.

ā€œand all you see is sandā€

For more than 10 years, whenever I work with electronics, I work with Chris Swithinbank. I usually come to him with a very specific problem, and we build new tools around whatever I need for a piece.

One thing I often need is to understand the frequency content of sounds I’ve recorded, so that I can recompose them, transform them, orchestrate them, or use them as a starting point for new material. I used to do this with different softwares, but the process could be incredibly slow. So this year I asked Chris if we could find a way to make it faster, and he built this Max patch for me.

It analyses and resynthesizes my sound files, live-tracks their frequency content, and gives me different ways of filtering, navigating and visualising what is happening inside the sound. In this video I’m showing just a few of its features.

A huge thanks to Chris for always understanding what I need and turning it into something I can actually work with, and a shout-out to Daniele Ghisi and Andrea Agostini, whose Bach library for Max made it possible for us to visualise all of this so clearly. by @claranoise

Summer drop.

Catania, Aix-en-Provence, Montaldeo, Bressanone, Roma, Berlin.

One of the most beautiful, challenging, and exhausting summers of my life. Absurd pieces, impossible deadlines (still not finished), and extreme heat that sent me to the hospital 3 times, twice as a patient, once as a visitor (don’t ask).

I met incredible young composers and musicians, we built a wonderful community, shared so much, and I feel like I learned a lot from them.

I still hate mosquitoes (they love me, though) but overall, this summer was just exhaustingly great šŸ’™ by @claranoise

@festivaldautomne à Paris - Clara Iannotta

Samedi 16 novembre à 20h
Auditorium - @maisondelaradioetdelamusique

@clara.iannotta : strange bird – no longer navigating by a star (nouvelle version)
Dmitri Chostakovitch : Concerto pour violoncelle n° 2 »
Franz Schubert : Symphonie n°9 « La Grande »
