New friends = time for a reintroduction! Hi, I’m Clare 😁 When little me started taking pics in college, I learned all about portrait photography - so, when the fam at @gravel_worlds & @panaracer_world asked me to do finishers’ portraits at this year’s event you bet your gosh dern bottom I said DUH. I had an absolute blast hosting peeps in my mini-studio 📸 and meeting so many incredible athletes!

If you’re still reading, a lil’ about me: I have a PhD in creative writing and I am an SEO/Web Specialist/Organic Growth Lead in the transportation industry 🚛 I started riding bikes as a kid and am currently on a hiatus 🫣

My return to cycling has been sporadic and emotional. 2022/2023 saw the epic decline of my cycling abilities. Though bikes were my job, they had also become an afterthought. I knew my fitness was suffering, and I used that as an excuse to keep myself off the bike… feeling ashamed because I’d let my foundation crack and would have to start all over again. So, I stopped riding. But, I never stopped feeling guilty.
•
I decided that if I was going to make my return, I’d have to do it band-aid style. I’m the type of person who is either balls to the wall or in slug mode. There is no in-between. I’d registered for the @midsouthgravel 50 mile in late 2023 and had spent the winter debating if I’d even show up. But after realizing the ride would be just two days before my 35th birthday, I decided the best present I could give myself would be to BE PRESENT for myself and enjoy a day out on the bike with zero expectations.

I had one goal: keep my HR below 185. Anywhere over that number, I knew I was bound to 🤢 and would have to pull out. My average HR for the entire ride was 153, with a max of 183. I pedaled 7.1 mph over 4200+ ft of elevation, sometimes by myself and sometimes with @kim.toscano.holmes24 and her group of pals 💕

The DFL jeep appeared in all its glory. It kept close watch as @abbybiedenbach and @takemeahaircut rode backward to find me after the single track and bring me home. And home I was — at Duck Street, I heard people cheering my name. The finish line was surrounded. I was engulfed by love. I cried my eyes out on @unlearnpavement and @stillwater_cycles. Never in my life has a moment resonated with such singularity: I can do the hard things. Even if I’m in last place. Even if I can’t climb a hill to save my life. I can do it.

I am so grateful to everyone for being there for me. For encouraging me, tracking my ride, and also for reminding me just how much I love the Stillwater bike community.

Ironically, I broke my foot Monday night and now have to avoid bikes for 6-8 weeks. But, I still have Saturday to hold on to. And yes, I will be back in the saddle again 💕 taken in Stillwater, Oklahoma by @clare.paniccia
