This feels like Suomifornia. Happy to welcome HOTPIPE HILLBILLIES to the official selection of the very first Suomifornia Film Festival. On an unlikely stretch of England’s south coast, where the water runs brown and the waves are shaped by concrete, a crew of surfers have turned an industrial outflow pipe into their own unlikely surf spot. Hotpipe Hillbillies is a film about community, resilience and finding joy in the most unexpected places. Through humour, grit and a serious love of surfing, the film proves that passion matters a lot more than perfect waves. This ain’t Cornwall. It sure ain’t California. What are your hobbies alongside board sports? Do they bring you the same kind of joy? I was really fascinated by this week’s podcast guest @clareventham (producer of excellent surf film Hotpipe Hillbillies) and her love of sea fishing alongside surfing. It’s something I’ve never tried, but it does chime with me that they both give you that sense of focus, even if the adrenaline isn’t the same. THIS WEEK’S PODCAST EPISODE IS LIVE! We have @clareventham on the podcast, producer of the excellent surf documentary Hotpipe Hillbillies, focused on my local surf spot in Shoreham. Alongside this being Clare’s first producer role (she’s normally a SEN teacher) she’s also a mum of two, the second being a super recent addition (November) The thing I never appreciated pre having kids was the freedom and spontaneity you have. Clearly life isn’t perfect or easy, but freedom over your own time is a huge privilege and I wish I had surfed my little heart out then! We chat about this at length on the podcast, alongside the friends who make it possible for Clare to get in the water (although she’s been able to get in twice since birth, so you can see the difficulty!) Then meet next week’s guest on the @boardwomen podcast @clareventham producer of the excellent film HotPipe Hillbillies - a brilliantly guy-Ritchie esque take on the traditional surf film genre and featuring characters from my local surf break, Hotpipes in Shoreham, not far from Brighton (or lovingly called Shitpipes by many) The twist? Clare is a first time producer, and is traditionally a SEN teacher, but she came up with the concept of this film when she had her first child and was out of surfing and wanted a way to stay connected to the community. Two completely sold out screenings for the premiere of Hotpipe Hillbillies! Can’t quite believe it’s over…..but this is just the beginning!
