Recorded live at the Livonian Cinema in Culver City, California on December 23, 2024, “Ballona Creek Improvisations” pays homage to Hermeto Pascoal and Ricardo Lua’s 1985 audiovisual exploration “Sinfonia do Alto Ribeira”. Structured around the concept of the four elements (Earth, Water, Wind, and Fire) and Life, Pascoal and Lua’s work chronicles the disturbance and survival of ecologies within the Alto Ribeira region of the Atlantic Forest in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Magnetic Vines, in collaboration with Hailey Niswanger (woodwinds), Clarice Castilho (percussion), Kevin Yokota (drums), and David Reiman (visuals), applies this approach to a disturbed ecosystem within the Los Angeles Basin: Ballona Creek. Originally a free-flowing river draining a watershed of over 130 square miles from the Hollywood Hills in the north to Baldwin Hills in the South, the modern-day creek exists as a system of storm drains and concrete channels— only a tiny fraction of its original wetlands, springs, and other aquatic ecosystems remain. Yet Ballona Creek continues to flow through the physical and psychic landscape of Los Angeles, supporting over 3000 species of flora, fauna, and fungi while inspiring a wide variety of sonic and visual art. Through video, field recording, collective improvisation, and studio production, Magnetic Vines, the Livonian Cinema, and friends celebrate the survival of this living waterway and ponder its complex and evolving relationship with the humans who live above and alongside its waters.
