Clark Mitchell’s oil paintings are driven by a lifelong need to capture the landscape—a discipline that started outdoors, en plein air. Each piece begins in soft pastel on location, meeting the scene as it actually is. Back in the studio, memory and imagination take over: pastel studies are carried forward into oil, often layered with copper, aluminum, or composition gold leaf. The metallic surface catches light differently from every angle, giving each painting a shifting, atmospheric quality that mirrors the landscape itself. View these works and more new pieces from Clark as a part of our second Summer Group Show, now on view until August 30th! 🖼️🌄🤩

As regional rep for the @PastelSocietyoftheWestCoast I hosted a group of talented artists at Matanzas Creek Winery outside Santa Rosa, CA on Tuesday. The bees were super busy and the air was heavy with that unmistakable scent of lavender in bloom. Perfect day to paint with friends old and new!

I got up at sunrise each morning during @iaps_pastel convention last week in Albuquerque, NM, to head out painting before it got too hot. I stayed outside Bernalillo, north in the Rio Grande Valley. Every morning a delight. Final pastel is the view from driveway where I stayed, with cows waiting for the rancher to feed them!#clarkmitchellpastels #pleinairlandscapes #IAPS-pastels #newmexicolandscapes #pastellandscapes by @clarkmitchellpainter
