Congratulations to President Beong-Soo Kim on his investiture as the 13th president of the University of Southern California! ❤️💛

As a proud public service of USC, Classical California is delighted to celebrate President Kim not only in his new role, but also as a fellow lover of classical music! 🎻

Did you know President Kim is a cellist? As one of our Classical Californians, he shared the music that has shaped his journey, from Brahms and Schubert to his own performance of Bach’s Sarabande from Cello Suite No. 1. He also shared selections that celebrate the musicians he admires while honoring his Trojan roots. 🎶

Missed the conversation? Listen to the full episode On-Demand at classicalcalifornia.org.

What does the path to an LA Opera podium look like?

For Domingo Hindoyan, it started in Caracas with El Sistema and a violin, alongside Gustavo Dudamel. Then came Berlin, Liverpool, and eventually Los Angeles. Now Hindoyan becomes just the third Music Director in @laopera history, succeeding James Conlon after 20 seasons.

His first season begins with Carmen on October 17, in LA Opera’s first new production of the work since 1998.
Swipe through for the story behind the conductor stepping into one of LA’s biggest musical roles.

What are you curious to hear from this new chapter?

Tania León has spent more than five decades widening the sound of American classical music.

She helped build Dance Theatre of Harlem as its first music director, conducted major orchestras, created platforms for living composers, and kept writing music of her own.

In 2021, Stride made León the first Latin American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Music.

And she’s still writing what comes next. This fall, Gustavo Dudamel and the New York Philharmonic premiered her new orchestral work, Imágenes mestizas, and this month they’re taking it across Europe.

Swipe through for the story of an artist whose influence reaches far beyond any one role.

If you’re new to Tania León, would you start with Stride or Imágenes mestizas?

Danzón No. 2 carries more than one story. The danzón was born in Cuba, found a second home in Mexico, and became part of the musical world Márquez grew up around.

After his family moved to California, Márquez began studying violin at 14 in La Puente, California, and later returned to earn his MFA at CalArts.

Decades later, violinist Anne Akiko Meyers asked him for a concerto rooted in Mexican music. The result was Fandango, premiered at the Hollywood Bowl with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

From Mexico to California and back again through the music.

Where did you first hear Danzón No. 2?
