How does a traditional spiritual become a powerful anthem of the Civil Rights Movement? 🤔 Ask Nina Simone!

Recorded on her 1965 album, Pastel Blues, Simone transformed the song “Sinnerman” - a song addressing a sinner’s plea for repentance - into a cry for urgency and resistance. She repeatedly calls out in her unmistakable refrain:

“Power!” (more than 30 times)

Simone’s music belonged to the people and gave voice to generations who refused to be silenced. Hear “Sinnerman” and more musical storytelling at American Sound Takes Flight this October 23, 24 at @thewallisbh and at our free open house on October 28 at @ambassadorauditorium!
