For @obra_books, I am producing a series of unique works. Each of the 300 copies of the magazine will contain a different variation of its contents.

Taking inspiration from Aspen Magazine, I am thinking of the magazine not as a fixed publication, but as a space for experimentation. A collection of printed matter in which each element can exist independently, yet becomes part of something larger.

300 copies, 300 different arrangements. No two magazines will be exactly alike.

A magazine that is not only read, but discovered, unfolded, handled and rearranged by @claudiadelatorrea

What does your idea need to become a book?

At the @artistsbooksworkshop, we don’t begin with a format, a binding or a predetermined idea of what a book should look like. We begin with what you bring.

Photographs, texts, drawings, archives, collections, found material, a score, an existing work, or an idea.

From there, we edit, sequence, print, cut, fold, bind, test and reconsider.

The aim is not to fit the work into a book, but to find the book that the work needs.

I see teaching as part of my artistic practice. The workshop is also my studio and the headquarters of @backbonebooks, a space for thinking together through the book, where questions around editing, sequence, scale, material and structure are explored through making.

These are not decisions that come after the work. They are part of the work. by @claudiadelatorrea

After 8 years of teaching experience and 15 years of self-publishing, I’ve crafted The Artist Book Workbook, a practical and creative guide for anyone wanting to develop an artist book from an initial idea to a finished concept. Through prompts, exercises, and reflections, the workbook helps shape ideas, clarify direction, and make the process feel more intuitive and approachable.

For artists, designers, photographers, students, and anyone curious about books as a form.

The Artists Books Workbook is now available.

Books are not stable. They come apart. They are cut, folded, rewritten, misplaced, duplicated. They carry traces of what they were a nd hints of what they might become. This exhibition gathers works that move within this space, between construction and deconstruction, where the book is not a fixed object but a shifting form. by @claudiadelatorrea

The responsive publication was developed by Claudia de la Torre in the context of the exhibition “8 erweiterte portraits,” which centered on the work of the Austrian photographer Cora Pongracz (1943–2003). It reflects the exhibition’s dialogical extensions through artistic contributions and interventions by Cora Pongracz, Seiichi Furuya, Marietta Mavrokordatou, Paul Niedermayer, Deva Schubert, and DAVRA—translating them into an equally dialogically structured publication format. The publication is available at our Kunstverein or in the online shop.

Dear Reader. Do Read.
Claudia de la Torre
einBuch.haus, 2026
@claudiadelatorrea @einbuch.haus

When einBuch.haus was invited to the “mini UNFOLD Tokyo,” @shanghaiartbookfair organised by @bananafishbooks under the theme “A Bookshop’s Souvenirs” this year, I immediately thought of the message that has hung in einBuch.haus since its opening: “Dear Reader, Do Read” by Claudia de la Torre - A homage to Ulises Carrión. A variation on his piece “Dear reader – Don’t read”

Visitors at einBuch.haus are often encouraged by this four-word, two-sentence message“Dear reader. Do read.“ displayed on the main wall of the space. Rather than taking a photograph of Claudia de la Torre’s artwork to remember their visit, we chose to create a postcard that our dear readers can take with them and hold in their hands.

Claudia was happy to create this edition on the occasion of “mini UNFOLD Tokyo” at Shibuya PARCO, from 29 April to 10 May 2026.

Dear readers in Tokyo, please visit to see our special edition alongside other einBuch.haus publications. (More info comes next week)

Thanks @bananafishbooks for your invitation to the fair.

The works have as a starting point a selection of unclassified books hosted in the @museumimkulturspeicher museum’s library. The compositions were made using the xerox machine as a tool that has its own rules. The result is an installation that makes use of the bureaucratic as well as archiving systems in the museum. The title follows the classification system used in the museums library.

A Hundred Years of The Future of the Book Experimental Publishing Today
March 16, 2026
@iciberlin

I will lead an informal gathering to share and reflect on my editorial practice. It will be structured around a selection of artist books I have produced over the past fifteen years, placed in dialogue with other books from my personal collection that in different ways resonate with them. This will not be a chronological or theoretical presentation, but rather a meeting of editorial objects that allow participants to think together about materiality, narrative, and publishing as an artistic practice.

By exploring the connections between my own work and that of others, I will facilitate a discussion about the ways in which artist books function as relational and performative objects, encouraging interaction and dialogue.

The gathering aims to create a space for close observation, where books can be handled, read, and discussed collectively.

Prologues / Epilogues
Claudia de la Torre
2 x11 cm, 248pp, perfect binding, one errata
in an edition of 50 copies
backbonebooks No. 95
2025

40 EUR

Prologues / Epilogues is an artist book designed to be read in two directions: from beginning to end, and from end to beginning. This dual structure is reflected in its form, consisting of 60 fictional prologues and their corresponding epilogues.

The book is split into two inverted halves that mirror each other requiring the reader to physically flip the book to switch between the two.

At its core, the project positions the reader as the bridge between prologue and epilogue, offering them the freedom to choose where the narrative begins. This openness invites reflection on the dynamic relationship between beginnings and endings, and how meaning shifts depending on one’s point of entry.

By omitting the central element, the body of the novel or the main story, the book embraces a deliberate incompleteness. In this absence, space is created for the reader’s imagination to fill in the possible middle. The book becomes not just something to be read, but something to be completed by the act of reading and interpretation.

The writing is inspired by authors whose work has deeply influenced me. Without their voices, mine would not exist. Prologues / Epilogues is both an homage and an invitation: to explore, to reflect, and to reimagine the shape and rhythm of narrative itself.
