EPHEMERAL SPACES – ARCHIVES IN MOVEMENT

Raumklasse UdK Berlin x Deutsches Tanzarchiv Köln
Winter 2026_27

You don’t have to be a dog to wear the Dog Days bandana (but it’s extra cute if you are….see last pic).

Hello book lovers! I’m Claudia de la Torre (@claudiadelatorrea), a Mexican artist, publisher, and founder of @backbonebooks, based in Berlin.

Books have been at the center of my practice for many years. I make, design, edit and publish concept-driven artist books, exploring the book not simply as a container for work, but as a space where the work itself can happen.

I founded @backbonebooks in 2011 and have since published more than 90 titles. Alongside my own artistic and publishing practice, teaching has become an important part of what I do.

Since 2021, I’ve been running @artistsbooksworkshop from my Berlin studio, working closely with artists to translate an idea into a physical book. We think through editing, sequence, scale, paper, rhythm, binding and all the decisions that allow a book to become a work in its own right.

Over the years, I’ve led more than 200 workshops in my studio and at art institutions internationally, most recently in Chile, Hong Kong and Denmark. In 2024, I was invited by the Center for Book Arts in New York as keynote speaker for the Contemporary Artists’ Books Conference.

My work and publications are held in collections including MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Thomas J. Watson Library, Yale University, NYPL, Museo Reina Sofía, mumok and Fundación Ankaria.

But what continues to interest me most is quite simple: what can a book do that another form cannot?

That question runs through my art, my publishing practice and my teaching.

Happy to have you here, and always happy to meet others thinking through books

Trimming. A moment of full focus. Last step to make all pages even. Thanks to @om_on_sky for capturing me in that moment !

PS. I think I will work on fixing my guillotine.

The Artists’ Books Workshop takes place in my own studio in Berlin, home to both @claudiadelatorrea Studio and @backbonebooks

It’s where I work, make and publish, surrounded by my machines, materials, collection of artists’ books and the backbonebooks archive.

For the ABW, I open this space and everything in it. The books, tools, machines and archive become part of the workshop.

Goodbye Berlin, the past two months have been so special that I have no words (but luckily I have some pictures).

Thank you so much @claudiadelatorrea for having me. I’m so glad I could be part of @artistsbooksworkshop this summer, and I’m incredibly grateful for this experience, for everything I learned, and for all the people I’ve met along the way. I also hope I was able to give something back in return!

This time will always have a special place in my heart 🤍

So much of the process happens through conversation.

Thinking together, asking questions, looking closely, testing possibilities. How can an abstract idea become something tangible? What form does it need to take?

Through these conversations, decisions begin to emerge. What to keep, what to leave out, how to sequence, fold, cut, repeat or reveal.

At the Artists’ Books Workshop, making a book is not only about making. It is about creating a space to think together, where ideas can slowly find their form.

Last month we were in Prague to view and document @klara.kusa ‘s diploma project at the Academy of Fine Arts.

‘Archive of Transit’ explores mail art as an ongoing process of critical communication across time and space. Through postal exchanges around the world, some set up in person, others online, Klara invited eight individuals to participate using the same simple instruction:

“Send me something, to which I will respond by sending something back”

The initial contribution could be anything, from a note to an art piece; the exchange would be the work itself. Through a series of dialogues that accompanied the physical mail, these conversations reflect on how artistic identity is negotiated within institutional frameworks.

Pictured on slides 4 and 5 are a few excerpts from Klara’s correspondence with @claudiadelatorrea . These excerpts from Archive of Transit, along with seven other conversations, will be published this fall by @markhampress

I’m somewhere in the middle of the second Summer @artistsbooksworkshop , and I just wanted to stop for a moment and say how much joy this brings me.

This is something I planned and imagined for months, and seeing it now alive in the studio is incredibly exciting. The space is full of people thinking through books, trying things out, changing their minds, cutting, folding, talking, looking, making decisions and finding their way through their projects. I love being part of that process.

And I couldn’t do any of this without @alicjagaszta . Having her support, energy and care throughout these weeks has made all the difference.

There are still a few days ahead of us, and I’m very curious to see where all these books will land!
